The journal Musica sacra ( Latin for 'sacred music', in the sense of ' sacred music ') is the association journal of the General Cecilia Association for Germany (ACV) and at the same time the oldest still published specialist journal for Catholic church music and liturgy in Germany . From an ecumenical perspective, it also provides information about church music from other denominations . Musica sacra reports on internal association events and provides news and information from other supraregional associations such as the Federal Association of Catholic Church Musicians in Germany and the Pueri Cantores . Musica sacra is currently being published by Bärenreiter-Verlag Kassel and appears six times a year with a circulation of 3500 copies.

Other journals in this segment are the ecumenically oriented publication Musik und Kirche and the Protestant Forum for Church Music .

history

The magazine was published for the first time in 1868 as Musica sacra - a monthly for church music and liturgy by Franz Xaver Witt . It initially formed a supplement to the flying sheets for Catholic church music published in 1866 , published for Germany's elementary school teachers, as well as for choir leaders, organists and friends of music and the participation of several musicians , who also served to further disseminate the goals of the General Cäcilienverband. While the Fliegende Blätter was an official Cäcilien-Verein-Organ (CVO) , Witt combined with Musica sacra "contributions to the reform and promotion of Catholic church music".

At the 23rd General Assembly of the ACV on October 2, 1928 in Cologne, the Cäcilienverein organ (CVO, vol. 60) and Musica sacra (vol. 59) merged to form the Cäcilienverein organ Musica sacra , Monthly for Church Music and Liturgy decided. At the end of 1937, the CVO Musica sacra stopped its publication due to the increasingly difficult political conditions.

A new journal, Die Kirchenmusik , under its secretary Johannes Mölders , saw itself committed to being the successor of the CVO Musica sacra in six years (1938 to 1943) . In 1949 another successor organ appeared under the title CVO - Zeitschrift für Kirchenmusik bis 1955, which now took over the year count of the former CVO and began with the 69th year.

As part of the ACV's centenary celebration in 1968 in Regensburg , the 88th year of the Musica sacra became a two-month publication. During the editing of Stefan Klöckner (1999–2005) and with the approval of the ACV board, the Musica sacra got a new face and a larger format. Under his successor Marius Schwemmer , the title of the magazine Musica sacra - The magazine for Catholic church music was specified and, from the 130th year onwards, the cover and inner section were changed to colored.

The editorial team in office until issue 6/2015 has continued the path taken by Stefan Klöckner together with the ACV Presidium of taking into account the modern demands and requirements of the present day in terms of layout and content with the Musica sacra . This shows u. a. in an increased focus of the magazine on the practice of church music. So new series such as “Aufs Des Pult” and “Canticum novum” have been initiated and notes for practice have been integrated in the middle of the booklet, which will appear again for the first time since the 126th year. Individual series such as “Rätselstück”, the annual series of the 127th year with “Seven Questions on Church Music” to the Catholic Bishops (with the title Earth singe! Mirror of Catholic Church Music in Germany ; Carus-Verlag Stuttgart) were finally summarized as book publications. The magazine's website has been revised and expanded with an additional offer, the download area. Issue 5/2008 was published as a special issue with the central texts of Pope Benedict XVI. to church music.

In addition to online additional texts for the individual issues, the spectrum of Musica sacra includes specialist articles on current key topics, reports from church music life, information and current news, tips for practice, CD, DVD, sheet music and book reviews, an event calendar, composer portraits , Presentation of new organs, job advertisements and notes. Since 2012, all previously published articles from Musica sacra , CVO / Fliegende Blätter for Catholic church music and the church music yearbook / Cecilia calendar have been available on the Musica sacra website . Dominik Axtmann, who works as a church musician in Karlsruhe, has been the new editor since January 1st, 2016.
