Stefan Klöckner (born December 4, 1958 in Duisburg ) is a German Roman Catholic theologian , musician and musicologist .

Life

After completing his school education, Klöckner first studied music at the Folkwang University in Essen . There he completed his training as a singing teacher with Edmund Illerhaus in 1983 with distinction. At the same time he completed intensive studies in Gregorian chant with Godehard Joppich . Until 1991 Klöckner studied Catholic theology and musicology with Arnold Angenendt , Walter Kasper and Peter Hünermann at the University of Vienna , the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster and the Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen . In 1990 he received his Magister artium with distinction. In 1991 he was at the University of Tübingen with a dissertation on the Christological foundation, eschatological orientation and ecclesial wortsakramentalen switching events as the subject of ecumenical convergence efforts to Dr. theol. PhD . Subsequently, Klöckner was head of the office for church music ( diocesan music director ) of the Rottenburg-Stuttgart diocese .

In 1997 he was ordained permanent deacon and worked as a part-time deacon in the diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart (parish of St. Michael / Tübingen ); after his call to Essen he was a deacon at the high cathedral church in Essen , the Essen cathedral . In 2016 he left the ministry at his own request.

In 1999, he received a call to the professor for Gregorian chant and liturgy (since 1 October 2009 Professor of Musicology / Gregorian and history of church music) at the Folkwang Hochschule in Essen, he was also from 2009 to 2013 Vice President for Studies, Teaching and Research (previously from 2006 to 2009 Dean of Faculty 2). From the winter semester 2008/2009 he teaches as professor invité at the Catholic Theological Faculty in Friborg (Switzerland) ; there he deals with border issues between theology and music.

On April 1, 2009, he was appointed head of the newly founded Institute for Gregorian Chant at the Folkwang University (now University of the Arts), which he held until the end of 2017. Klöckner is director of the " Münsterschwarzacher Choral Courses" (since 1994) and also directed the "International Gregorian Chant Summer Courses" at the Folkwang University of the Arts, Essen (2002-2017). In 2012 he initiated the only higher education in Gregorian chant in Germany with a certificate course.

In addition to his work as an author in specialist journals and author of several books, numerous musical recordings by Klöckner have been released on CD. Until 2005 he was vice-president of the General Cecilia Association for Germany (ACV) and editor of the magazine for Catholic church music “ Musica sacra ”.

Awards and honors

In 1997, Stefan Klöckner was awarded the “ Ruhr Prize for Art and Science ” from the city of Mülheim an der Ruhr .

In 1999 he received the Luther Medal in Silver from the Evangelical Church in Württemberg for his successful ecumenical collaboration in the field of church music . In the same year he was appointed church music director by Bishop Walter Kasper in recognition of his services to church music .

In 2015 the Diakoniewerk Neuendettelsau honored him with the publication of a "Löhe-Portrait". On the occasion of his 60th birthday, the Festschrift Klingendes Wort published by Markus Uhl and Christoph Weyer was published .

In 2018 Stefan Klöckner was honored with the Orlando-di-Lasso-Medal of the General Cecilia Association for Germany (ACV). With this award, the association honored Klöckner's scientific and artistic work in the field of Catholic church music.
