Ruhr Prize for Art and Science

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ruhr Prize for Art and Science was founded on April 17, 1962 by the city of Mülheim an der Ruhr . Initially only planned as an art prize , it was decided in 1963 to expand it to include scientific achievements and this addition was included in the name of the prize.

The award's foundation was created at the suggestion of visual artists from Mülheim. The prize is intended to support artists and scientists resident or born in the city in Mülheim. The prize is intended as an incentive for special achievements and is intended to serve as an award as well as to promote talented people. In the field of science, it was time and again the heads of Max Planck Institutes in Mülheim , but also of younger research institutions, who were considered worthy of awards. With the publicly effective awarding of the award, the importance of art and science should also be anchored more firmly in the cultural awareness of the citizens.

The award has been presented annually since 1962. In preparation for the award, a constantly changing committee of external consultants is formed in the various disciplines, which submits a recommendation to the "Works Committee for Culture". A personal application is not possible. The works committee makes the decision on the award winners.

The prize money is EUR 6,000 (as of 2017) and is financed by Sparkasse Mülheim an der Ruhr . The prize can also be awarded in parts. With the award of the prize, the cultural operations committee can also make a recommendation to support the award winner in the future through municipal commissions or grants.
