Hendrik Dorgathen

Hendrik Dorgathen (* 1957 in Mülheim an der Ruhr ) is a German illustrator and draftsman .

After graduating from high school in Duisburg, he studied art education and evangelical theology, before moving to the comprehensive university in Essen in 1983 to study communication design . As an illustrator, he has provided work for Geo , Die Zeit , Bild der Wissenschaft , SZ-Magazin , FAZ , the New York Times and numerous other publications. Since 2003 he has been professor of illustration and comics at the Kassel Art College . The cartoonist and illustrator Lukas Kummer is one of his master students .

In addition to his illustrative work, he also created comic books and animated films for the music channel MTV , for theater productions, for international feature films, for the Expo 2000 in Hanover and for the Smithsonian Institute in Washington . He developed performances in collaboration with the ZKM Karlsruhe for the Transmediale in Berlin and for the Kunstverein Kassel . Since 2018, his illustration of a dragon has adorned the Mario Adorf Prize, which is awarded as part of the Nibelungen Festival in Worms .
