The Erlangen International Comic Salon has been an event that has taken place every two years since 1984 and, with over 25,000 visitors, is the most important comic festival in German-speaking countries and is also known as the "Erlangen Comic Biennale ". The organizer is the cultural office of the city of Erlangen (festivals and programs department), festival director is Bodo Birk. The comic parlor always takes place over four days on the Corpus Christi weekend (i.e. during the Whitsun holidays in Bavaria ) and alternates with the Munich comic festival . The last event was held from May 31st to June 3rd, 2018. The last time the salon was to take place from June 11 to 14, 2020, was canceled in the usual form on April 8 due to the uncertain situation in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic . Instead, the digital comic salon took place, during which the Max and Moritz Prize was awarded.

The idea for setting up the comic salon came from comics creators and ICOM members Achim Schnurrer , Riccardo Rinaldi , Ingo Stein, Burkhard Ihme , Hansi Kiefersauer , Horst Berner, Eckart Sackmann , Hartmut Becker , André Roche and Gerd Zimmer and became the City of Erlangen's cultural office proposed for implementation. The first comic parlor was then held in the summer of 1984.

The focus of the 17th Comic Salon in May 2016 was the situation of comic and satire artists in Turkey . In several exhibitions and panel discussions it was also about the discussion of the cartoonists with the issues of flight and asylum . The main exhibition in the Heinrich-Lades-Halle was the focus of the Japanese manga artist Jiro Taniguchi .

The centerpiece is the comic fair in the Heinrich-Lades-Halle, the congress center of the city of Erlangen with stands of many German comic publishers and comic dealers . The fair is complemented by exhibitions that are distributed at various locations in downtown Erlangen, including the Erlangen Arcaden shopping arcade (where the Duckomenta was presented in 2010). The comic podium in the town hall offers lectures and discussions. Every Saturday there is a comic exchange for booklet and album collectors . The accompanying program also includes a comic film festival that - sometimes as previews  - cartoons and live action movies to comic book shows.

The Erlangen Comic Salon can always come up with many local and international comic artists for book signings . So far have been u. a. Moebius , Milo Manara , Jacques Tardi , Albert Uderzo , Morris , Gosho Aoyama , Don Rosa , Art Spiegelman , Don Lawrence , Jim Lee , Hansruedi Giger , Hansrudi Wäscher , Ralf König , Klaus Cornfield , Isabel Kreitz , Wendy Pini , Olivia Vieweg , Sarah Burrini and Flix .

The highlight of the salon is the Max and Moritz gala in the Markgrafentheater . The Max-und-Moritz-Preis , the most important German comic award , is presented within this framework . Until 2010 the gala took place on Saturday evening, since 2012 the prize has already been awarded on Friday evening in order to give the award-winning artists one day more attention from the press and the public. In the salon years, the ICOM also awards its annual ICOM Independent Comic Prize in Erlangen.

In addition, an exhibition of the annual Franco-German comic book workshop takes place at the comic parlor . There, the participants of the seminar, which takes place immediately before the event in salon years, present their work from the last two years.
