André Roche (* 1952 in southern France ) is a freelance illustrator .

Career

Roche attended a hotel management high school in Strasbourg and, after passing the hotel management diploma (BTH), came to Germany to deepen his knowledge of the German language. After working in various catering companies, including the Tantris restaurant in Munich , he stayed in this city and learned the profession of animator ( animation and claymation ) in various animation studios out of curiosity . Since 1975 he has been working as a freelance illustrator for the publishing and advertising industry.

As a draftsman and painter, he designed and drew around 160 comic strips as well as numerous merchandising illustrations of Maya the Bee , as well as others by Nils Holgersson , Tao Tao , Tom and Jerry , Alice in Wonderland , Wickie , Donald Duck , with his team of authors and drawings . Mickey Mouse , Heidi and The Pink Panther .

He is most likely one of the first artists in the world to consistently use the airbrush painting technique to color comic figures and their surroundings as early as the late 1970s . This gave the comic characters a three-dimensionality that had not been in use until then and only became common decades later with the development and spread of electronic graphics programs.

As an active member of the German comic association ICOM (1981), Roche belonged to the small circle of comic artists who, in 1984, worked with a. a. Achim Schnurrer, Riccardo Rinaldi , Ingo Stein, Burkhard Ihme , Hansi Kiefersauer , Horst Berner, Eckart Sackmann , Hartmut Becker and Gerd Zimmer have successfully tried to convince the cultural office of the city of Erlangen that a comic parlor would look good in this city . This salon has taken place every two years since then.

At the same time, he painted cover pictures, cartoons and illustrations for various magazines such as Das Rechtsmagazin , Das Industriemagazin and the Funkschau .

From 1983 he started making figures a. a. for the children's surprise egg from Ferrero . The first were supplementary characters to the series Happy Frogs (1986) and the Tapsy Törtels (1987). He drew the modeling templates and the puzzles for the licensed series Tao Tao , Pumuckl , the Jungle Book , Maya the Bee , Donald Duck , the Smurfs , the Aristocats and Mickey Mouse .

In 1987 he created his own figures for Ferrero, the Happy Hippos , which appeared several times in different constellations in later years: in fitness fever , on the dream ship , The Happy Hippo Company , The Happy Hippo Wedding , The Happy Hippo Hollywood Stars , Das Hipperium (one of George Lucas authorized pastiche of his trilogy Star Wars ), The Happy Hippo talent Show . The success of the Happy Hippos figures led Ferrero to launch new products, the children's Happy Hippo Snack and the Happy Hippo Cacao . This was followed by the Teeny Tapsy Törtels (= Tartallegre ), the Crazy Crocos , the Peppy Pingos , the Drolly Dinos (later called Dapsy Dinos ), the Funny Fanten , the Bingo Birds , the Top Ten Teddies , the Hanny Bunny's and the Pinky Piggys . Several of them have been used repeatedly around the world to promote various Ferrero products, sometimes under different names. Roche also realized the television commercials for these series using animation technology for the German-speaking market.
