Milo Manara (born September 12, 1945 in Lüsen ( South Tyrol ); actually Maurilio Manara ) is a comic artist who is best known for his erotic comics, realistic drawings and distinctive, precise lines.

life and work

At the beginning of his career, Manara, like many other illustrators, first devoted himself to painting and advertising before making his comic debut in 1969 with the crime thriller Genius . With regular drawings for two in Italy very popular, partly pornographic comic magazines of the genre fumetti neri (crime and satanic), he financed his architecture studies at the University of Venice between 1968 and 1971 . At the same time he drew posters for a Maoist artist collective called Miraculo . The architecture student at the time had previously been apprenticed to the Spanish sculptor Miguel Ortíz Berrocal , which taught him a lot about the plastic representation of the human body. Between 1971 and 1973 he drew the cheaply produced erotic pirate story Jolanda de Almaviva and made several comic strips for the Italian magazines Telerompo and Corriere dei Ragazzi. At the latter magazine, which was discontinued in the early 1980s, he drew ten episodes of the series La Parola Alla Giuria ( The jury have the floor ) in 1975 based on models by Mino Milanis, in which the deeds of a historical figure ( Nero , Attila , Maximilien de Robespierre , Robert Oppenheimer , etc.) were retold and the readers were to decide at the end whether the persons had acted lawfully. In 1975, together with Alfredo Castelli and Mario Gomboli, he published Un fascio di bombe , a comic book study on the alleged strategy of tension , which was distributed by the PSI ( Partito Socialista Italiano ) with a circulation of 400,000 during the election campaign in the same year .

Manara achieved his international breakthrough in 1978 with his comic adaptation of the Chinese literary classic The Monkey King (with the text by Silverio Pisus , first published in Pilote magazine ). This was followed by work for the encyclopedic book series Histoire de France and Die Eroberung der Welt published by Larousse , including on the Crusades , Charlemagne , James Cook and Vasco Núñez de Balboa . Manara achieved world fame with the four adventure stories about the Zeitgeist hero Giuseppe Bergmann, drawn from 1978 to 1987 based on models by Hugo Pratt and Federico Fellini for the Belgian magazine (à suivre) , in which one of the most intelligent comic book novel drafts with a confident narrative and drawing style pairs. His allusions to artistic, philosophical and religious topics convey a complex picture of his worldview and his self-presentation as a modern artist. Around the turn of the millennium, two more booklets were published with the adventures of this most famous and successful figure of Manara, but they differ significantly in style and technology from their predecessors. In To look at the stars , Manara plays with the traditions and clichés of painting and uses the symbolism of inherited motifs to enrich his image statements. Here Bergmann meets a girl who throws herself into all kinds of illustrations in world literature. When the comic hero tracks her down, he turns to pages with illustrations by Botticelli and Doré . They are illustrations for Dante's The Divine Comedy . Then the reader sees outlines of Dante and Virgil as his guides through the inferno, just as Doré engraved them, standing in a panel by Manara. The comic reflects the wood engraving used in book illustration in the 19th century as a forerunner medium. But Manara is also fascinated by a literary work that has set free artistic imaginations like no other. Manara takes the reader on a similar tour through the history of the fine arts in Mein Museum , an homage to the painter models from different eras: the mythical Phryne , the muse des Praxiteles , Rembrandt van Rijn's partner Hendrickje Stoffels or the model for Caravaggio's "Death Mary ".

Many people know Manara primarily or only through two famous, highly erotic stories that are among the highlights of his oeuvre: Out of Control (1 to 4; in the original under the title Il gioco (The Game), 1st part published in 1983 by Playmen ) and The Scent of the Invisible (1st / 2nd; in the original under the title Il profumo dell'invisibile ). The first part of Out of Control was filmed in 1985 under the title " Le Déclic " by Jean-Louis Richard with Florence Guérin as Claudia Christiani. The scent of the invisible was also filmed in France in 1997.

Other notable works in the following years were the western Der Mann aus Papier (published in 1984 by Volksverlag under the title "Vier Finger") and comic versions of two never filmed scripts by Federico Fellini: Die Reise nach Tulum (German edition by Carlsen ) and The journey of G. Mastorna [alias Fernet] (German edition by Schreiber & Reader ). In his works, Manara had repeatedly expressed his admiration for Fellini's films by quoting images. He also designed the posters for Intervista and The Voice of the Moon . Fellini's script for the planned film The Journey to Tulum first appeared as a serial in the Milan daily Corriere della Sera . The mysterious adventure story follows the stations of a trip to Mexico on the inexplicable footsteps of Carlos Castaneda . In the comic, film director Fellini's alter ego takes on the role of Marcello Mastroianni , who travels to Mexico with his troupe to get to know the mysterious world of local magicians. The screenplay Die Reise by G. Mastorna has been published in German by Diogenes Verlag . Manara's comic version of the cinematic treatment is enriched with absurd grotesques, surreal illustrations, graphic narrative sequences and layout scribbles.

Manara caused an international sensation in 1983 through his collaboration with the scenario artist Hugo Pratt, with whom he devoted himself to the topic of the colonization of the two Americas (as previously in his western comic Four Fingers ). Together they brought out An Indian Summer , a 144-page graphic novel . The fruit of a further collaboration with Pratt in 1991 was the band El Gaucho , which had little to do with eroticism, but rather belongs to the Western genre. The epic about "El Gaucho" will remain unfinished forever due to Pratt's death, while "An Indian Summer" is self-contained.

As a contribution to the Columbus year 1992, Manara, together with Enzo Biagi and Giacinto Gaudenzi, created the work Columbus (German edition by Carlsen), which has the quality of a textbook but always remains interesting and exciting. Also in 1992 Manara drew the comic book El Fuego y las Entranas , the scenario of which was written by the film director Pedro Almodóvar .

In the field of advertising, Manara designed in addition to car advertising z. B. 1998 two commercials for Chanel Nº 5 with the model Estella Warren in the role of Little Red Riding Hood , both directed by Luc Besson . A selection of his advertising work can be found in the Artbook Memory . In 2007 Panini Verlag and Milo Manara signed an exclusive contract that includes the worldwide licensing of all of Manara's works and merchandising products.
