Harvey Award

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Harvey Awards are awards given for special achievements in the field of comics . The full name is " Harvey Kurtzman Awards", after one of the co-founders of MAD magazine and co-inventor of Alfred E. Neumann . They are among the oldest and most important awards in the comic industry.

The Harvey Awards were launched in 1988 on the initiative of Fantagraphics Books after the Kirby Awards had been discontinued the year before. From the respective nominees, a jury made up of professionals from the comic industry selects the five in a certain category in a public vote, who are then shortlisted, in which the winners are ultimately determined.

The awards were presented at various trade shows in North America: Chicago Comic-Con, Dallas Fantasy Fair, Wondercon (in Oakland) and Pittsburgh Comicon. The 2004 award ceremony took place on June 26 at the Museum of Cartoon and Comic Art (MoCCA) in New York City . Since 2006, the Harvey Awards have been presented at Baltimore Comic Con (late August / early September). In 2017, Baltimore Comic Con replaced the Harvey Award with the Mike Wieringo Comic Book Industry Awards .
