Sheldon Douglas "Shelly" Moldoff (born April 14, 1920 in New York City , † February 29, 2012 in Lauderhill , Florida ) was an American comic artist . Moldoff was best known as the creator of the comic characters Poison Ivy , Batgirl and Hawkgirl .

Life

Moldoff, who was born in Manhattan in New York, grew up with his two brothers (Sonny and Stan) in the Bronx. When he was seventeen, he began working as a draftsman for National Periodicals. There he initially designed sports cartoons that were printed in Action Comics , and then worked mainly as a cover artist, i. H. as a draftsman of the title pages of a booklet for various series, such as All-American Comics . In the early 1940s, Mayer created the Black Pirate series , which was about the adventures of a pirate, and worked on the comics about the alien cop Hawkman .

After temporarily participating in World War II at the beginning of the 1940s, Moldoff returned to his old profession in 1945. In 1953 he took over the drawings for the comics about the superhero Batman as a ghost draftsman from Bob Kane , which he designed for a total of fourteen years until 1967. Since Moldoff's name was not mentioned in the story credits, the stories in question were long attributed to Bob Kane , who actually only commissioned them. In addition to Dick Sprang and Win Mortimer, Moldoff became the most important Batman illustrator of the 1950s. The numerous new characters whose appearance Mayer designed during this time include the eco-terrorist Poison Ivy, the magical nomad Bat-Mite and the "Bat-dog" Ace.

In 1967 Moldoff was fired from DC along with a number of other well-known cartoonists such as Wayne Boring and George Papp , so that from then on he was dependent on his living as an illustrator for television cartoons such as Courageous Cat and Minute Mouse - for which he designed the storyboards - as well as for "Fast-food" restaurant chains like Burger King and Red Lobster - designed for comic books that were added to the so-called "children's menus" - to earn.

Sheldon Moldoff lived with his wife Shirley in Lauderhill , Florida , where he died on February 29, 2012 at the age of 91.
