Spider-Man 2099

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Spider-Man 2099 is a sequel to the Spider-Man comic book series published in 1992 by Peter David and Rick Leonardi in Marvel Comics . As the name suggests, the action takes place in the year 2099 and is only loosely linked to the original series.

World of the year 2099

In 2099, large corporations like Alchemax and Stark-Fujikawa dominated political and economic events in the USA. The days of superheroes like Spider-Man or the Avengers are over. The superheroes only live in the memory of the people, whereby a religious personality cult has developed around Thor , whose followers are called "Thorites".

The cities of 2099 are divided into upper and lower cities, in which the upper and lower classes live. While in the upper towns the bourgeoisie enjoys amenities, such as holographic servants, thanks to private security services, people in the lower towns live in constant fear of violence from street gangs.

action

Miguel O'Hara, a young aspiring researcher, is promoted to Head of Genetics at Alchemax. Inspired by the hero Spider-Man, he hopes to recreate his powers through artificial splicing . After Alchemax allows a convict to die as a test subject in an experiment, Miguel decides to quit. His boss, Tyler Stone, then injects him with Rapture, a drug manufactured by Alchemax that induces severe physical addiction by mixing with the user's DNA. Stone uses Rapture to keep his subordinates compliant, as Alchemax is the sole maker of Rapture and its dependence on it lasts for a lifetime. In an attempt to free himself from the influence of the drug, Miguel undertakes an unauthorized experiment which aims to overwrite his DNA with an older sample. However, this is sabotaged by the insertion of random code fragments by Aaron Delgato, an employee of Miguel who has long been jealous of them. As if by a miracle, Miguel survived the experiment despite the sabotage and is also freed from his dependence. However, he later finds out that his DNA was mixed with that of a spider, giving him superpowers. On the run from the Alchemax security forces who want to investigate the accident, he pretends to be a Thorite as Spider-Man. This announces from now on that Spider-Man appeared to him as a harbinger of Thor. In the comics, the new Spider-Man has to deal with his unexpected role as well as his unprocessed past, where he meets new and old opponents, such as Dr. Doom or Venom .

Main character

The capabilities of Spider-Man 2099 are only roughly the same as those of the old Spider-Man. O'Hara, for example, does not need mesh cartridges because his body already produces a corresponding secretion. In addition, Spider-Man 2099 climbs using special barbs on toes and fingers, and it is extremely fast. He also lacks the so-called spider sense completely, but he has special fangs with which he can paralyze people.
