Marvels
Marvels is a graphic novel written by Kurt Busiek in 1994 and drawn by Alex Ross . The well-known Marvel heroes are only more or less marginal figures here; the plot mainly relates to the people and their reaction to the strange newcomers on their planet.
action
The reporter Phil Sheldon lives in a time when a lot is changing. It all begins with a press conference at which an artificial human being is presented, which its inventor, Phineas D. Horton, calls the Human Torch. From then on the appearances of superhuman beings increase, to which many people react with indignation and refer to them as "freaks". Phil doesn't care, however, and tries to empathize with these creatures, even when he loses his left eye through their fault. He writes a book with all the deeds about these beings, which he calls the "Marvels". With the appearance of the mutants, his distrust grows too, but this soon subsided after he has to find out that his family has a little mutant girl named Maggie in the basement. This situation reminds Phil of the prisoners of Auschwitz, which convinces him that mutants are the real victims. When the Fantastic Four finally defeat Galactus, he is indignant that they are not sufficiently honored for this feat. Eventually, he tries to prove that Spider-Man wasn't responsible for George Stacy's death, as most people believe through the Daily Bugle. He asked the imprisoned Dr. Octopus and Stacy's daughter Gwen. He involuntarily witnesses her kidnapping and murder by the green goblin. When the newspaper finally condemns Spider-Man and Gwen's death is mentioned only in passing, Phil has enough and he withdraws to have more time for his family.

The comic appeared in 1994 in four prestige issues. In the following year 1995 it was published in German as a one-volume complete edition in the imprint "Feest USA" by Ehapa Verlag . In 2009 Panini Verlag brought out a new German edition. In 2013, the comic was released as Volume 12 of the Official Marvel Comics Collection.
