Galactus , sometimes called the world destroyer or planet eater, is a cartoon character in the Marvel Comics universe . Galactus was created by Jack Kirby and Stan Lee and first appeared in Die Fantastischen Vier # 48.

When Galactus threatened to destroy Earth , the Fantastic Four drove him out with the help of Galactus' former Herald , the Silver Surfer, and the Ultimate Nullifier , an extremely powerful cosmic artifact. Thereupon Galactus swore to leave the earth alone for all time.

Galan von Taa was the last survivor of the final bang of the previous universe . He was a researcher who investigated the impending end of the universe and was transformed into a cosmic being at the focal point of the final bang while his universe was dying. After the Big Bang of the current universe, its metamorphosis was completed in a cosmic egg. After billions of years, Galactus "hatched". Although he now called the "cosmic force" his own, Galactus was dependent on feeding on the energy of planets without which he could not survive. He travels through the universe, always looking for planets that offer him food. Over millions of years he became one of the most feared beings in the universe, he was responsible for the destruction of countless extraterrestrial civilizations. Nevertheless, Galactus is not angry, his actions are more like a force of nature.

To help him in his search for new worlds, Galactus endowed various heralds with cosmic power. Most of them sooner or later rebelled or tried to betray him. Its heralds were the Silver Surfer, Terrax , Firelord , Air-Walker , Nova , Morg and Red Shift .

In Galactus: The Devourer (1999 miniseries), Galactus died and was transformed into a star by the combined forces of the heroes of Earth and the Shi'ar Empire. He has since returned, including in the series Die Fantastischen Vier and Thanos .

The Ultimate version of Galactus represents the Hive consciousness Gah Lak Tus, a collection of machines. Like Galactus, it uses heralds, so-called Silver Men, to search for planets on which it can feed. When it attacked Earth, Reed Richards ignited a new big bang inside and damaged it so badly that it retreated again.

In Age of Ultron , Galactus was pulled from the main universe into the Ultimate universe after the barrier between the universes was briefly damaged due to the many time travel . There, Galactus united with Gah Lak Tus. After Galactus attacks Ultimate Earth, he is locked in the N-Zone with the help of Reed Richards, Kitty Pryde and Thor.

After he returned, the Ultimates cured his hunger and eventually turned Galactus into a life giver.

Galactus also appeared in the Earth-X miniseries, which took place outside of Marvel’s normal continuity. This series revealed that Galactus was an indispensable part of the universe because the planets it destroyed were actually "eggs" of the mighty Celestials , and Galactus averted an overpopulation of the universe with Celestials. However, since other Earth X revelations were found to be invalid for normal continuity, this aspect of Galactus' actions may only apply to Earth X.

Actual filming

Galactus is part of the plot of the film Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer . The main protagonist, however, is his herald, the Silver Surfer; Galactus itself was portrayed by screenwriter Don Payne as a "supernatural cosmic power" in the form of a gigantic structure consisting of smoke, fog and darkness.

Animation

Galactus appears regularly in the animated series Silver Surfer . There he is quite human according to his comic original: Galactus has a (supernaturally large) humanoid body, is eloquent and floats through space in a planet-sized space base.
