Eisner Award

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Eisner Award (also Will Eisner Comic Industry Award ) is one of the most important American awards for comics creators. The namesake of the award, Will Eisner , was a regular participant in the ceremony until his death in 2005.

The predecessor of the Eisner Awards were the Kirby Awards , which were given from 1985 to 1987 . The Kirby Awards were sponsored by Amazing Heroes Magazine and organized by Dave Olbrich. In 1987 there was a dispute between Olbrich and Fantagraphics (the company that published Amazing Heroes), as both claimed ownership of the Kirby Awards. Finally a compromise was reached: From 1988 the Kirby Awards were discontinued and instead two new awards were introduced; Olbrich started giving the Eisner Awards and Fantagraphics has now given the Harvey Awards .

Every year publishers and comic book makers submit their proposals for the awards. The five-member jury, appointed by the organizers of the comic fair in San Diego, nominates five candidates for each of the award categories. The suggestions are then sent to employees and professionals in the comic industry in the form of a voting slip. Voting results are announced and prizes are awarded annually (except in 1990) at the Comic-Con International comic book fair in San Diego , California .

Other prizes will also be awarded during this ceremony:

  • Bob Clampett Humanitarian Award named after Bob Clampett, a popular animator, cartoonist and director.
  • Russ Manning Promising Newcomer Award. The award has been given since 1982 for outstanding performance. It is named after Russ Manning, the author of the Tarzan and Star Wars newspaper strips.
  • Bill Finger Award for Excellence in Comic Book Writing. Named after the co-creator Batmans, this award is given each year to one living and one deceased recipient for outstanding achievement.
  • Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailer Award is given to the best comic book store.
  • Comic-Con Icon Award is given to the person or organization that has done the most for the distribution of comics.
  • Comic-Con International's Inkpot Award has been presented for outstanding performance since 1974.
