Life and work

Sale, who spent most of his life in Seattle, studied at the University of Washington (State) and the New York School of Visual Arts . Sale began working as a full-time comic artist in the 1980s after DC editors Barbara Randall and Matt Wagner became aware of his work at a comic book convention in San Diego and gave him his first engagements.

Sale, who became known for his cartoon-like drawing style, which is conspicuous through slight echoes of abstract art and expressionism, often does the ink reworking of his drawings himself, while the coloring is usually done by other artists, since Sale is color-blind.

In the past, Sale has mainly worked for the two leading US comic publishers DC Comics and Marvel Comics . His most frequent artistic partner was the writer and screenwriter Jeph Loeb , whom he met in 1991 while working together on a miniseries in the series Challengers of the Unknown published by DC . As a result, the two created three so-called “Halloween specials” for the series Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight , which appeared between 1993 and 1995 on the occasion of the popular American holiday in November, as well as the two Batman practice series Batman: The Long Halloween (1996 to 1997; thirteen parts) and Batman: Dark Victory (1998–1999; fourteen parts), as well as the Superman miniseries Superman for all Seasons , which came out in 1998 on the occasion of the 60th birthday of the Superman character.

Other works that emerged from the Sale / Loeb partnership include a number of issues for the Spider-Man: Blue , Daredevil: Yellow and Hulk: Gray series for Marvel Comics and the DC Catwoman miniseries When in Rome .

Apart from the collaboration with Loeb, Sale drew the, by Alan Grant , issues # 7-9 of the Batman series Batman: Shadow of the Bat , and he designed the covers for various other Batman and Batman-related comic series, such as Batgirl , as well as for Series from DC's Vertigo imprint like El Diablo .

From 2006 Tim Sale also worked for the television series Heroes . He painted the pictures for the precognitively gifted Isaac Mendez. However, the pictures he painted did not appear in exactly the same way in the television series, he only drew templates in black and white or shades of gray with pen, brush, ink and charcoal. These were then colored by Dave Stewart. He described his work with Heroes as an exciting and new experience.

Tim Sale has two dogs, named Hotspur and Shelby , and has been a football fan all his life .
