Bill Willingham (born December 1956 in Fort Belvoir , Virginia ) is an American comic book author and illustrator.

Life and work

Willingham began working as a full-time comic book writer in the early 1980s after receiving a position as an editor at IRS, a role-playing game maker, in the late 1970s.

He made his artistic debut with the series Elementals which was published by Comico. For this he wrote the issues # 1-23 of the first series under this title, the issues # 1-16 and 18-23 of a restarted second series, as well as some specials such as Elementals Special , Elementals: Sex Special (1991), Elementas: Ghost of a Chance (1995) and Elementals: The Vampire's Revenge . This was followed by a few stories for DC Comics' sci-fi classic Green Lantern and three booklets for the Coventry series he created himself . For Eros Comix, Willingham also produced some pornographic comic stories in 1991, which came out under the title Ironwood (# 1-11).

In the late 1990s, Willingham wrote the thirteen-part series Pantheon, which was published by Lone Star Press. This was followed by phases of concentration on his literary work: he wrote a series of short novels that dealt with the modern adventures of the Celtic mythical figure of the warrior Beowulf and the fantasy novel Down the Mysterly River .

Since the early 2000s Willingham has worked extensively as a writer for DC Comics: Among other things, he has a miniseries about the character of the witch Thessaly from Sandman ( Sandman Presents: Thessaly, Whitch for Hire # 1-4), which Proposition Player series and the Fables series presented. In addition, from 2004 to 2006 he wrote the superhero series Robin (# 121-147) and wrote several magazines for the series Batman (# 631-633 and # 643-644) and Legends of the Dark Knight (# 168). Willingham wrote a booklet for the Ultimate X-Men series for DC's competitor Marvel Comics .

Following on from the six-part mini-series Day of Vengeance, Willingham has been writing the sixteen-volume series Shadow Pact since 2006 about a group of magicians, demons and other practitioners and carriers of psychic abilities, which consisted of characters such as Deadman , Zatanna and Ragman .

The long-lasting Fables series has appeared in DC Comics' imprint Vertigo since 2002 . The series is about various fairy tale characters who were driven from their homeland and have to make their way in today's New York. The series won the Eisner Award and is the template for the video game The Wolf Among Us by Telltale Games .
