Along with Marvel Comics, DC Comics is one of the largest US comic publishers . He is particularly known for the comic series Batman and Superman . Other known figures and series are u. a. Wonder Woman , The Flash , Aquaman and Green Lantern as well as the Justice League .
The publishing house was founded in 1934 by Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson as National Allied Publications . The current name "DC Comics" is derived from one of the publisher's first, very successful comic series, Detective Comics , which has been published since 1937. The publisher has been a subsidiary of WarnerMedia company Warner Bros. Entertainment since 1969 . The publishing house is headquartered in New York City . Diane Nelson has been President since 2009 .
history
Beginnings in the 1930s
After the founding of National Allied Publications by Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson , the comic series New Fun: The Big Comic Magazine began to be published in 1935 , at that time still in large format. The publisher's second title, New Comics , introduced the format of American comic books (approx. 17 × 26 cm) , which is common to the present day, and was published until 1983 after being renamed Adventure Comics . In 1937, Wheeler-Nicholson joined forces with publisher Harry Donenfeld to pay off debts and founded Detective Comics, Inc. , which published the Detective Comics series of the same name . A year later, Wheeler-Nicholson was forced to leave the new publisher and Detective Comics., Inc. bought National Allied Publications as part of the bankruptcy estate .
Another series called Action Comics was published in 1938 . A costumed superhero named Superman appeared for the first time in the first issue , who developed into a great sales success for the publisher. Other costumed heroes soon followed, including Batman , Wonder Woman , The Flash and Green Lantern, as well as the first superhero team, the Justice Society of America . Together with the superhero comics published by the competing publisher Timely (now Marvel Comics ) during the same period, at the time of World War II , the national comics of that time are referred to as the golden age of superhero comics in the USA.
World War I and sales decline in the 1940s
In the meantime, Detective Comics, Inc. and National Allied Publications merged to form National Publications . In 1944, the publishing house All-American Publications was also bought. With Independent News , which also belongs to Donenfeld , the merger to National Periodical Publications finally took place , but even then the booklets also bore the unofficial publisher's name "DC Superman".
After the end of World War II, readers' interest in superheroes waned and the publisher focused on other genres . Only the most popular superheroes like Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman (until today "the big three" of DC) continued to appear.
New start in the 1950s
In the second half of the 1950s, DC made first attempts at a restart with the superheroes. The Flash and Green Lantern were initially relaunched in new versions on a trial basis, and given their great success, the publisher soon joined its most successful heroes in a new team, the Justice League of America .
Merged with Warner Brothers in the 1960s
The competing publisher Marvel (formerly Timely ) tried in the early 1960s to build on the success of the DC heroes with their own newly created superheroes. In retrospect, the publications of both publishers at that time are also referred to as the Silver Age of superhero comics.
In 1963, the artist Roy Lichtenstein produced two well-known pop art paintings called Drowning Girl and Whaam! (1963), both of which parodied issues of DC Comics. Drowning Girl , in which a black-haired girl drowns but, according to her speech bubble, "would rather go under than ask Brad for help," is based on the cover of the DC comic book Secret Hearts # 83 (November 1962). Whaam! , in which a US fighter jet shoots down an enemy aircraft, essentially takes over a panel from the DC comic All-American Men of War # 89 (February 1962).
In 1969 National Publications merged with Warner Bros. (then Warner Bros.-Seven Arts). In 1976 the publisher officially renamed itself "DC Comics, Inc.".
A breath of fresh air in the 1970s

It was not until the late 1960s and early 1970s that numerous old veterans of the publishing house were replaced by new young employees. These were heavily influenced by Marvel. Artists like Dennis O'Neil or Jack Kirby invented new characters or developed the old heroes further. In DC, the characters' stories were linked to one another, and the various magazine series referred to one another. However, this rapid development got out of hand. Too many parallel universes, time continuities, and alternate earths were invented and put off new readers. The stories were difficult to understand and the overview was lost.
The superhero comics of the time (and up until the early 80s) are also known as the Bronze Age of Superhero Comics.
Restructuring of the comics in the 1980s
The countless parallel universes were abolished in the mid-1980s. That should provide clarity and appeal to new readers. DC published the series Crisis on Infinite Earths (1985/1986) and restructured all of the publisher's series. A constant universe with no parallel worlds was created, with the result that there was only one timeline and one earth. In the individual series, the stories of the origins of the individual heroes have been reinterpreted, especially Superman, whose story was reopened in the six-part miniseries The Man of Steel (1986) by John Byrne . The modern age of superhero comics began .
In the late 1980s, DC managed to take Marvel's leading market position as the series The Dark Knight returns (1986) by Frank Miller and Watchmen (1986/1987) by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons clarified the change at the publisher. The new, creative freedom that was granted to the artists received a lot of attention.
Time of comic events and decline in sales in the 1990s
Since the Crisis on Infinite Earths had not closed all the gaps in the storyline, the publication of Zero Hour (1994) answered open questions and completed some narrative threads. Since the "Crisis" in the mid-80s (especially in the summer months when sales are weak), stories have been published annually that cover several magazine series and special volumes, so-called comic events . Other of these events such as Underworld Unleashed (1995), Final Night (1996) or DC One Million (1998) received a lot of attention.
In the early 1990s, there was a noticeable boom in the comic industry, thanks to a combination of the acquisition of the booklet as a collector's item and the various acts that also received a lot of attention in other media. DC saw increased sales when the stories of Superman Killed (1992/1993) and Batman Crippled (1993/1994) hit the market. The sales figures fell as a result of the speculative bubble , which was due to the severe economic downturn and the public's lack of interest in comics. The competitor Marvel was on the verge of bankruptcy in the 1990s.
Sales hits in the 2000s
When the 12-part miniseries Batman: Hush (2002/2003), created by Jim Lee and Jeph Loeb , came out, it was again a success with readers after a long time and the popular Marvel X-Men comics hit the reader charts the first position replaced.
Since too many ambiguities had accumulated again in DC's comic book universe at the beginning of the 21st century, DC began with the Identity Crisis (2004/2005) to build a foundation for a milestone that was to change the previous DC universe and gain new readers . The Infinite Crisis (2005/2006) was intended as a sequel to the Crisis on Infinite Earths from the 80s. The story was picked up again, leaving its mark throughout the DC Universe. The three great heroes of DC - Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman - subsequently left their environment for a year, which, thanks to the One Year Later concept (2006), had no effect on the monthly series, because the series made a leap a year into the future. What happened in the meantime without the three important characters was told in the major project 52 (2006/2007), which was written by star authors such as Grant Morrison or Geoff Johns , and dealt with the lesser-known heroes such as Question . Series 52 was real-time which meant the series came out weekly in the US, which meant a lot of work for writers and illustrators. The same was done with the following series Countdown to Final Crisis (2007/2008) and Trinity (2008/2009), both of which also had 52 issues; at the end there was the Final Crisis (2008/2009) with the deaths of Batman and the New Gods .
From 2005 the "All-Star" series will appear at DC, in which the most famous characters of the DC universe were thematically treated. The special thing about it was that the authors did not have to stick to the continuity of the individual series and could redefine the heroes, but it was not about Elseworlds stories. The series appeared irregularly because of the enormous effort. In July 2005 all-star Batman & Robin the Boy Wonder (2005-2008) was released, which was created by top stars Frank Miller and Jim Lee and tells the story of Batman and Robin anew. This series split the opinion of fans as Miller presented a Batman who looked very somber and grumpy. In November 2005, All-Star Superman (2005-2008) by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely followed . "All-Star" series of Wonder Woman and Batgirl were planned before the project was stopped altogether in 2008.
Development in the 2010s
The DC heroes had to deal with resurrected dead as part of the Blackest Night (2009/2010) and the subsequent Brightest Day (2010/2011) events .
On June 1, 2011, the publisher DC announced that all current series about the DC universe will be discontinued in August 2011 and that 52 series will be restarted in September. So all DC Comics had a number 1 in the so-called " New 52 ". That was a direct consequence of what happened in the mini-series Flashpoint (2011), which consisted of a total of five main editions and several subplot strands.
In 2014, the plans for the DC Extended Universe were published, with several comic series films being released.
In May 2016, all current DC comics were reset to zero as part of the DC Rebirth , the only exceptions were the Superman series Action Comics and the Batman series Detective Comics . Characters like Kid Flash (Wally West), Aqualad (Jackson Hyde), Atom (Ryan Choi), Huntress (Helena Bertinelli) and Doctor Fate (Kent Nelson) have been reintroduced into the DC universe. Dick Grayson became Nightwing again after working as a secret agent for the Spyral organization for some time , Stephanie Brown (spoiler) and Cassandra Cain were reintegrated into the Batman comics, as was the couple Green Arrow / Black Canary. Superman (Clark Kent) and Lois Lane were merged from the two previous versions. These changes in the universe were made possible by the intervention of Dr. Manhattan explained and narrated in the maxi series Doomsday Clock .
Imprints
Since 1993, an older target group has also been addressed with the vertigo imprint (including Sandman , Hellblazer and Preacher ). The publisher WildStorm, founded by Jim Lee and now dissolved (including The Authority and Astro City ) and its label, and America's Best Comics publisher founded by Alan Moore (including Tom Strong and Promethea ) also belonged to DC Comics. Further imprints from DC are for example the publishers CMX (specializing in mangas ), Minx and Johnny DC (exclusively child-friendly comics). Some other imprints have now been discontinued. The best known of them are probably Helix (where the successful series Transmetropolitan was published up to episode 13) and Paradox Press (including A History of Violence , Road to Perdition ). DC has also acquired a number of companies, including MAD , the publisher of MAD magazine .
Another imprint was Milestone Comics from 1993 to 1997 which was produced by Milestone Media and released comics. This comic series had African American heroes as the main characters. The best known is Static, which was continued as a TV series.
