Aquaman
Aquaman (formerly known in German-speaking countries as Wassermann ( BSV Verlag ) and Seekönig ( Aller-Verlag )) is a superhero in the comic series of the same name from the US comic publisher DC Comics . The rights to the figure lie with the DC owner WarnerMedia .
The figure of Aquaman was created by Paul Norris and Mort Weisinger . Paul wrote the stories about Aquaman and Mort implemented them in drawings. Aquaman first appeared in US More Fun Comics # 73 in 1941 .
description
In the course of its 70-year history, the figure has been revised several times. This applies to both Aquaman's visual appearance and its background story. Originally Aquaman was shown with short blonde hair, an orange, tight shirt and green, tight pants. In the course of his history he was briefly given a blue camouflage suit and in the early 90s he became a rougher, long-haired, bearded man with a bare muscular torso and a hooked hand. This is how he was portrayed in the cartoon series The Justice League . The hook hand was later exchanged for a technological hand that Aquaman could telepathically control. In the later comic series Aquaman: Sword of Atlantis , Aquaman returned to its classic look, with short blonde hair, an orange, tight shirt and green, tight pants.
Although popularized in the Silver Age , Aquaman is a figure of the Golden Age . Created by Paul Norris and Mort Weisinger , with his first appearance in issue # 73 of More Fun Comics in 1941, he fought German submarines and warships during World War II . Aquaman made his last appearance in More Fun Comics in 1946 in issue # 107, from then on his stories appeared in Adventure Comics . After the war it did not disappear into oblivion, but its background story was worked out from 1959 onwards. As Arthur Curry, which is his real name, he is the son of the marine scientist Tom Curry, who came across Atlantis , and Atlannas, a resident of this legendary underwater city. This is how he developed the ability to breathe underwater and to communicate with marine animals. Then there was superhuman strength, resilience and speed. The background story was later modified, in which, for example, Aquaman's father was a lighthouse keeper and his mother an outcast from Atlantis. In the course of the multiverse of the 1960s, this was explained with various "aquamen", an interpretation that was not established in the long term.
From 1962 Aquaman received its first series, which ran until 1971 and was continued from 1977. From the 1970s, Aquaman increasingly developed into a figure that was perceived as ridiculous and weak. Reasons for this lie in newly ascribed weaknesses, such as the fact that he had to come into contact with water every hour, otherwise he would die. Above all, however, in his portrayal in the animated series Super Friends , which was broadcast from 1973 , which portrayed him as a rather useless character outside of water, who also “spoke” with fish and was perceived as a “joke” compared to other members of the Justice League . Aquaman should never get rid of this image, as can still be seen today in meme culture , as well as in various pop-cultural references, such as in The Big Bang Theory (episode: The Embarrassing Kiss (2010)), Robot Chicken , Family Guy or the parody The Deep in The Boys (2019).
From 1985, DC started the Crisis of Infinite Earths story series, which was supposed to revise the comic universe from the ground up. The new Aquaman created by Neal Pozner in 1986, completely in blue costume, was active in several mini-series, but could not prevail. The Aquaman, reinterpreted by Peter David in 1990, which broke with the previous figure and received its own series from 1991 onwards, was much more influential. Little was changed in the background story, but Aquaman was now a grim and gruff man, with a full beard, long hair and a bare chest. Instead of a hand bitten off by piranhas, he carried an imposing hook, and sometimes a harpoon. With his series, Time and Tide , Peter David, who oversaw the series for four years, was able to increase Aquaman's popularity, even at a time when slippery superheroes were increasingly perceived as boring. This Aquaman was considered grim and gloomy, fought in crossovers with Lobo , who destroyed his top and who in the DC vs. Marvel series defeated the Marvel hero Namor / Sub-Mariner with ease. DC worked hard to create an Aquaman that would no longer be joked about. The series ran for 75 issues, with subsequent authors such as Erik Larsen and Dan Jurgens not being able to tie in with Peter David. Rick Veitch started a new series in 2002 that ended after 57 issues in 2007.
Immediately afterwards Aquaman did not receive its own series. In 2011, DC restarted all of its comic series as part of New 52 , including Aquaman. Although he got his classic look again, with short blonde hair, orange, tight shirt and green, tight-fitting pants, he was again clearly grim and depicted as a disillusioned hero. Already in the first editions of Ivan Reis and Joe Prado, these refer to prejudices and jokes about the hero: When Aquaman visits a fish restaurant, he is laughed at by other guests, his order for a fish dish outrags them. He couldn't eat fish, after all fish were his friends and he talked to them. Aquaman replies irritably that he does not speak to fish. They lack brain capacity and intelligence for conversations. He alone telepathically controls them and gives them orders.
In 2016, DC started the Rebirth series, which also made Aquaman increasingly political, who opposed the pollution of the oceans, including by the USA. Author Dan Abnett brought Aquaman's role as a diplomat to the fore. The movie Aquaman , released in December 2018 as part of the DC Extended Universe , put the hero at the center of a film for the first time. The representation by Jason Momoa was clearly based on Peter David's comic interpretation.
