Young Justice is an American animated series that was first produced from 2010 to 2013 based on an idea by Greg Weisman and Brandon Vietti . It was based on the comic series of the same name . In 2019, new episodes were shown after a multi-year cancellation.

The release of the first season on the German Netflix platform was announced for January 1, 2018 . On that day, however, the first two seasons, for example in Switzerland and the Netherlands, were originally released with German subtitles , but not in Germany and Austria. A synchronized version was created from 2017, but its publication was not further announced and postponed. The synchronization of the first season was added retrospectively until February 1, 2018, for example in Switzerland and the Netherlands; the exact date is unknown. The second season was added on February 2 or 3, 2018 with German dubbing. In Germany and Austria, the series first appeared on Netflix on February 28, 2018 in German.

action

The series is about the Young Justice , a youth organization of the Justice League (Engl. Justice League ), an association unterschiedlichster superheroes from Batman , Superman , Green Arrow , The Flash , Aquaman , Martian Manhunter , Wonder Woman is performed and further. The Young Justice consists of the youth versions and assistants of their role models and accordingly do not, or not yet, have their distinctive skills.

characters

  • Aqualad / Kaldur'ahm is the leader of the team. He can control water through his abilities. He combines his powers with a mixture of Atlantean magic and science. Because of his calm character and his efficient approach, he was elected leader of the team, although he refuses this himself and only carries it out until Robin is ready to take it over.
  • At thirteen, Robin / Dick Grayson is both the youngest and, thanks to the training of Batman , the most experienced member of the team. He compensates for his lack of superpowers with his clear analytical mind. In addition to his technical expertise , he has outstanding hacking skills. He is more of a silent fighter who uses smoke bombs and above all throwing weapons. His slightly childlike and sometimes very selfish character meant that he was still denied team leadership and was temporarily taken over by Aqualad.
  • Kid Flash / Wally West is the team's 15 year old speedster . He can run extremely fast and using certain techniques, for example by running in place, can create a tornado. His abilities are nowhere near as pronounced as those of the Red Lightning , as although he recreated Flash's accident, he did not achieve the same strength. In this way he can manipulate his molecules, but not reach the same level, which is why he cannot run through walls like red lightning. Wally's character is rather relaxed, which is why he spares no effort to flirt with Miss Martian and always has a casual saying on his lips. On every mission he tries to get a souvenir for his collection.
  • Superboy / Conner Kent is a 16 week old clone of Superman . He was released from the team and then joined them. His abilities don't match those of Superman either. For example, it cannot fly, it can only make huge jumps. He detests telepathy because he was created to be a mind-controlled being. Due to his missing relationship with Superman, who for him represents a kind of father figure, he behaves even more irrationally than usual to his often ill-tempered manner.
  • Miss Martian / M'gann M'orzz is the 16-year-old niece of Martian Manhunter . Like her uncle, she can read minds, telekinesis , fly and is a shape shifter . At first, their skills are at a lower level than their uncle's and often out of control. Since she was accepted into the team as soon as she arrived on Earth , her combat experience is very limited. However, she owns a bio-ship , which she controls with her thoughts and uses to transport the team. She is an optimistic, friendly and sometimes naive woman who always starts her mind flashes with "Hello, Megan!" commented. She often uses telepathy to communicate with the team, which initially repels Superboy in particular, whom she seems to have had an eye on.
  • Artemis / Artemis Crock is a 15 year old archer and like Robin has no super powers. Although introduced to the team as Green Arrow's niece , it later turns out that she isn't. She has a strong personality and is an often focused and sometimes sassy person, which especially creates tension between her and Kid Flash. While on a mission, she becomes amnesia and is believed to have been sent by her father to kill Kid Flash. Artemis does not tell the team about her criminal background, but is not the only one with secrets.

Concept and development

The series began development in March 2009 when Sam Register, executive producer and vice president of the creative department at Warner Bros. Animation , wanted to develop a stand-alone television series that was a cross between the two comic book series Teen Titans and Young Justice . Register named the series Young Justice from the start and hired Greg Weisman, who was available after The Spectacular Spider-Man was discontinued, as producers and Brandon Vietti, who previously directed the animated film Batman: Under the Red Hood . Register said about his decision later in joke that while both were similar in appearance, but different in thinking, which should affect the concept of the series. Peter David, who already wrote most of the comics, was hired to write several series episodes. Greg Weisman, Kevin Hopps, Andrew Robinson, Nicole Dubuc , Jon Weisman and Tom Pugsley were also involved as scriptwriters, with Vietti advising a large part of the scriptwriting process.

After development, it became a series that is a mixture of the 1960s series Teen Titans , the 1990s series Young Justice and the recently published comic series, and revolves around the topics of secrets and lies . When the first scenes were drawn from the extensive comic material, the team tried to create a style that differed from the Teen Titans television series more like the Young Justice comic series and the New Teen Titans developed by Marv Wolfman and George Pérez oriented.

The concept of secret operations was based on the Impossible Missions Force from Kobra, take over . Together, Weisman and Vietti developed ideas, characters and stories that, according to their own statement, would last for at least two seasons. Even though the producers had a list of characters that wouldn't allow them to use them in the first season. However, this list got shorter and shorter during the production process.

Greg Weisman announced in March 2011 that a second season with 20 episodes under the title Young Justice: Invasion will be released from the first quarter of 2012 . This started with the episode Happy New Year! on April 28, 2012 on Cartoon Network.

The series was canceled in 2012 at the end of the second season.

In November 2016 it was announced that a third season of the series would be produced. The season is called Young Justice: Outsiders and was due to become available in 2018 as part of a new digital offering from DC Comics. However, the publication only started on January 4, 2019 on the "DC Universe" platform.

Costume design

When developing the costumes, the producers wanted not only to match the mood of the series, but also to harmonize it with the traditional style of the DC universe . Vietti, who was responsible for the character design, wanted from the start not only that the costumes reflected the physical needs of the heroes, but also the personalities of the individual wearers. The figure designer Phil Bourassa then worked this into the designs. For example, the padding on Kid Flash's suit serves to reduce the impact forces that he experiences when slipping and colliding in a fight.

Vietti himself showed this clearly by comparing the costumes of Aqualad and Robin, which he himself described as "tailor-made". While Aqualad's costume was designed for quick movements in the water, Robin's disguise primarily provides physical protection in the streets of Gotham City . Aqualad's clothing is made of a “smooth and textureless material”, which gives it an “almost seamless and shiny” appearance. Robin's costume, on the other hand, is padded and provided with other sewn-in materials. This is also continued in Batman's armor , which was designed according to the same basic idea, although Batman appears more military, while Robin has a more sporty character to underline his youthfulness.

animation

Warner Bros. has outsourced a large portion of Young Justice's animation to Seoul , South Korea , where MOI Animation, Inc. takes it over. While Warner Bros. Animation has its studio in Los Angeles , California , where the storyboards are drawn, characters are designed, backgrounds are designed and individual animations are produced, MOI Animation takes care of all the other animations in addition to minor storyboard additions. These are then colored and cut again at Warner Bros. Animation .
