Martian Manhunter is a cartoon character from DC Comics . He is a Mars- born superhero and Justice League member whose real name is J'onn J'onzz and who acts as John Jones on Earth as a private detective . description

Martian Manhunter is a tall, hairless humanoid with green skin. He has superhuman physical strength and telepathic abilities. He can influence the molecules of his body and his clothing through his thoughts and thereby change his appearance at will. He has a total of nine senses and is proficient in both X-ray and heat vision, but is very susceptible to fire. In some stories this weakness is physical, in others it is also psychological. A Justice League of America volume explains that the aversion to fire was implanted in Martians by the Guardians of the Universe in order to keep the Universe from being invaded by the Martians.

Martian Manhunter is crazy about oreo cookies. This was later changed to Chocos - probably for trademark reasons .

action

In his first story in Detective Comics 255 in November 1955, J'onn J'onnz was accidentally found by the human scientist Dr. Erdel teleported to earth . The scientist immediately suffered a heart attack and died. Stranded on earth and unable to return, J'onn J'onnz used his superpowers to make himself look human and eventually assumed the identity of a police officer named John Jones, who had been murdered by the Mafia . From then on he used his extraterrestrial powers to help the inhabitants of his new planet. TV and comics in particular helped him find his way around the world.

During the Silver Age , from the early 1960s to the early 1970s, when classic comic book superheroes enjoyed tremendous popularity in the United States, he also fought crime in his ancestral looks, equipped with a blue cape and a red crossed ribbon on his chest.

In later comics, J'onn J'onzz was portrayed as one of the last two survivors of his kind. The inhabitants of Mars - who was called Ma'aleca'andra in their language , based on a story by CS Lewis - have lived in a peaceful society of poets , priests and magicians for millennia . This utopia was free from war and resentment because each Martian could read the other's mind. J'onn Jonzz was then a happily married scientist and father, a man of M'yri'ah and father of K'hym , a girl. Only one Martian had no telepathic abilities, J'onn's brother Ma'alefa'ak . Out of envy and anger, he let the Hronmeer plague come over the Martians, a disease that could be telepathically transmitted and that burned the afflicted . The entire Martian race was exterminated, except for J'onn Jonnz, who believed he had killed his brother after a long battle. From then on, the story began again with the earlier comics, where J'onn J'onnz was teleported to Earth.

When Earth was attacked by various competing aliens in 1962 , vying to see who could conquer the planet first, the Martian Manhunter teamed up with Superman , Batman , Wonder Woman , Barry Allen as Flash , Hal Jordan as Green Lantern, and Aquaman in the Justice League . The story appeared in The Brave and The Bold 28 . J'onn J'onzz has since taken on the role of the wise thinker and sharp analyst on the team .

Appearances

The Martian Manhunter appeared in his first phase in many different comic series. Since 1955 he was regularly seen as John Jones in the Detective Comics (first in issue 225). After founding the Justice League , he still made many solo appearances in magazines such as House of Mystery , Adventure Comics , Action Comics, and Crisis on Infinite Earths, and made short appearances on Sandman . From 2000 he got his own series, written by John Ostrander and drawn by Tom Mandrake , which has since been discontinued.

J'onn J'onzz also appeared in the pilot for an unrealized Justice League television series . There he was not referred to as Martian Manhunter, and other than the ability to change shape, he had no super powers. He was played by David Ogden Stiers .

In the animated series Justice League (in the English original: Justice League ) from 2001 J'onn J'onzz was also not listed as Martian Manhunter. It was not until 2004, when the original English version of the series was transformed into Justice League Unlimited (in German, this follow-up series was broadcast under the unchanged title Die Liga der Gerechten ), that he reappeared under his superhero name. In the series, J'onn J'onzz came to Earth to warn people about aliens who had previously conquered Mars and only then becomes a member of the Justice League.

Martian Manhunter made guest appearances in the 8th, 12th and 22nd episodes of the sixth season and in some episodes of the following seasons of Smallville . He is played by Phil Morris .

In the television series Supergirl , which has been broadcast since 2015 , the character Hank Henshaw reveals himself as Martian Manhunter in the 7th episode of the first season. He is portrayed in both forms by David Harewood .
