David Ogden Stiers

David Ogden Stiers (born October 31, 1942 in Peoria , Illinois , † March 3, 2018 in Newport , Oregon ) was an American actor and musician .

Life

Raised in the small town of Peoria, Illinois, Stiers began his acting career in Northern California , but later moved to New York , where he joined John Houseman's The Acting Company .

He had his breakthrough as an actor in 1977 when he took on the role of Major Charles Emerson Winchester III in the hugely popular television series M * A * S * H and played until the end of the series. In the role he was more than a successor to Larry Linville and the Frank Burns he played, because the two characters are very different. Subsequently, Stiers mainly embodied intellectuals or figures of authority.

In the English-speaking world, he became known as a speaker in many Disney films. He has had speaking roles in animated films such as Beauty and the Beast , Pocahontas , The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and Lilo & Stitch . From 2002 to 2007 Stiers starred in the recurring role of the Reverend Gene Purdy in the mystery series Dead Zone . By the end of his career in 2017, he played in almost 170 film and television productions.

Stiers was also a professional musician and occasional guest conductor with various orchestras. He was openly gay . Stiers died on March 3, 2018 at the age of 75 at his home in Newport of complications from bladder cancer.
