Historical background

Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821. In the course of this, many settlers from the United States emigrated to Texas, which belonged to Mexico from 1821 to 1836, which led to ongoing tensions with the Mexicans. During this time there were also conflicts between the centralists, who wanted to centralize Mexico, and the federalists, who advocated a high degree of autonomy in the country. Texas was on the side of the federalists.

Finally, under Santa Anna , the centralists decided to enforce their vision of Mexico by force by staging a coup d'état and annulling the federal constitution. This led to open revolt against him in parts of Mexico, including Texas, in 1835. This later led to the fact that several months later, beginning on February 24, 1836, 189 men (the numbers are historically inconclusive) had to withstand the siege of the Alamo for 13 days when Santa Anna tried to attack Texas after he attacked the state of Zacatecas defeated and perpetrated atrocities there.

When the fortress finally fell on March 6th after three assaults by Mexican troops , all defenders lost their lives. The Mexican soldiers under the personal command of General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna were massively outnumbered. However, on the express orders of Santa Anna, all women and children were spared. These included the widow of Captain Almeron Dickinson, Susannah, and her baby Angelina, who was only a few months old. They were allowed to leave the place without any obstacles. There were many immigrants from Europe among the Texans; including two men from Germany, Henry Courtman and Henry Thomas, and people of German descent like Jacob Darst.

background

The film was made to highlight the human side of events with the purpose of describing the motivations of the main actors who ultimately led to the events of the Battle of El Alamo and to better describe the Mexican side of events. The decision was made to use Burt Kennedy as director because John Wayne , the producer and director of El Álamo , was his mentor.

criticism

"Prominent, but afflicted with pathetic clichés."
