Latigo (Original Title: Support Your Local Gunfighter ) is an American western comedy directed by Burt Kennedy .
content
The entire action takes place in the fictional gold rush town of Purgatory. This is where the gambler Latigo Smith ends up on his escape from Goldie, who is mad about marriage.
In the city, the two mine owners Taylor Barton and Colonel Ames are fighting and apparently using unfair methods. Both are working from different sides to work towards a gold vein that is located in the middle of the city.
When Latigo shows up in town, Taylor Barton mistakenly believes Latigo is the infamous and dangerous gunslinger Swifty Morgan and tries to recruit him with $ 5,000.
Latigo Smith is not a particularly successful gambler and therefore he always places his entire cash on number 23 when playing roulette . The game situations are used as the running gag of the film. After losing all of his money in this way, he accepts the offer, but now declares his new friend Jug May to be the gunslinger Swifty Morgan.
Latigo and May had become more closely acquainted when Barton Bambi's daughter (in the original Patience ) shot the two of them.
In the meantime, however, the real Swifty Morgan is ordered to the city by Colonel Ames and the showdown takes place . Latigo confronts the gunslinger with a stolen mule - packed full of dynamite. Frightened by one of the usual explosions under the city, however, the gunslinger shoots himself in his own foot and Latigo rides on his shy mount into the saloon, which explodes. By chance, this uncovered the main artery that everyone was looking for.
Latigo survives and has nothing better to do than bet everything on number 23 in roulette again. But this time he wins, breaks the bank and marries Patience Barton.
Reviews
- Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times , June 16, 1971:
- “One or two character actors, good. Even three or four. Why not?. But "Support Your Local Gunfighter," perhaps the worst western comedy in recent times, is drowning in character actors, each of whom only does a small part. "
- Cinema (magazine): "Apart from James Garner's truly remarkable sideburns, the snapshot has little to offer."
- Joe Hembus notes that the film is sort of a sequel to Even A Sheriff Needs Help and that it is "almost as exhilarating as this one" .
- Phil Hardy describes the film as "hilarious" , Elam's acting performance is "outstanding" .
backgrounds
After the successful film Even a Sheriff Needs Help (OT: Support Your Local Sheriff ) from 1968, Latigo (OT: Support Your Local Gunfighter ) shows similarities not only in the original title, but also in the script, core story and cast, so that almost a remake is available. The main difference between the two films is the orientation of the main character . If James Garner plays a serious pioneer in transit in Even a Sheriff Needs Help , his role in Latigo is more reminiscent of his earlier cast as a dubious player in the TV series Maverick from 1957 to 1962.
