Kathleen Freeman

Kathleen Freeman (alternatively: Katherine Freeman) (born February 17, 1919 in Chicago , Illinois , † August 23, 2001 in New York City ) was an American actress .

life and career

Kathleen Freeman first gained stage experience before she regularly took on supporting roles in Hollywood films from 1948. From a young age, the character actress mainly played matronly characters such as mothers, secretaries, maids, neighbors, nurses or old maids - almost always for comedic purposes. First, most of her film roles were small, but she had a striking appearance as a long-suffering voice teacher Phoebe Dinsmore in musical classic Singin 'in the Rain (1952). In the 1960s, Freeman was to Jerry Lewis what Margaret Dumont was to Groucho Marx , a kind of trademark. She took on comical supporting roles in numerous films with Lewis in the lead role. She is known to a wide audience through the role of sister Maria Stigmata in the comedy film Blues Brothers . Freeman also played regularly on US television, for example, she was in the sitcom ALF , episode 63, Cousin Blinky to see.

Kathleen Freeman died of lung cancer at the age of 82 . She was survived by her longtime partner Helen Ramsey.
