action

The three Sanderson sisters Winifred, Sarah and Mary live in 1693 in a forest near Salem in a typical witch's house. When they kidnap the sister of Thackery Binx in order to suck out her life force and thus become immortal, Thackery stands in their way. He has to watch how they suck the life force out of his sister. Winifred also curses him so that he is doomed to eternal life as a black cat. The three witches are captured by the residents of Salem and are to be hanged. But shortly before their execution, Winifred utters a curse: If a virgin creature lights the black- flame candle on Halloween , the three witches will return to earth.

300 years later, in 1993, Max Dennison, his sister Dani, and his crush Alison go to the former home of the Sanderson sisters. When Max lights the black-flame candle, the three witches return. Before they can harm them, they manage to flee, whereby Max, at Thackery Binx's urging, takes Winifred's magic book with him. But the witches take up the chase. They hide in a cemetery, as witches are not allowed to set foot on consecrated ground. Winifred brings to life her ex-boyfriend, Billy Butcherson, whose mouth she sewed for cheating on her with Sarah, so that he can bring the book back to Winifred. When Max and Alison feel safe, they open the magic book and give the witches, who are already saying goodbye to their lives, a clue as to where they are and the book. The witches snatch the book back and kidnap Max's sister Dani. Sarah's singing also attracts all of the town's children to her house. Max and Alison also set out to save Dani. Once there, Max manages to outsmart the witches and free Dani. He also spills her potion. The witches don't put up with it and rush after them to suck their life out, even though the magic potion is only enough for one “sacrifice”. But the witches are running out of time as the day is almost breaking and they only have this one Halloween night. If they fail to suck the life out of children, they are lost forever.

Max, Dani and Alison flee to a cemetery and meet Billy, who, as it turns out, is on their side. Although Winifred wants to suck Dani's life, Max drinks the last magic potion to sacrifice himself for his sister. In the fight, he manages to push Winifred off the broom so that she is in the cemetery. But before she can kill Max, she freezes to stone, because a witch is not allowed to step on consecrated ground. Day breaks, Sarah and Mary fizzle to dust and Winifred's statue explodes. The witches are forever destroyed. Since the witches are dead, Thackery Binx dies too, as Winifred's spell no longer works. In the end, Billy lies back in his grave and the now human spirit of Thackery Binx is eagerly awaited by his sister, with whom he goes along with a beam of joy. The film ends with the cemetery gate closing.

Reviews

"An expensive, lazy spell."

- Evening newspaper , Munich

"Abracadabra: shrill witchcraft."

“A sometimes turbulent teenage horror, technically solid, but staged without a recognizable profile of its own. Not suitable for younger children because of the high speed and the "real" horror effects. "

Awards (selection)
