Hiro Narita
Hiro Narita (born June 26, 1941 in Seoul , Korea ) is a cameraman who has been working in the United States since the 1960s . He was born in Korea but has Japanese parents.
Life
Narita grew up in Japan in 1945 and moved to the United States in 1957. In 1964 he studied graphic design and story illustration at the San Francisco Art Institute. After serving as a cameraman in the Army from 1964 to 1966, he was involved in documentaries for the BBC, for the Boston television station West Great Blue Hill (WBGH) and for the company David Wolper Productions. After assisting John Korty and Victor J. Kemper on the Michael Ritchie film Bill McKay - The Candidate in 1972, he worked on the 1975 television film Farewell to Manzanar , for which he received an Emmy Award nomination. In 1976 he was one of the cameramen on Martin Scorsese's documentary The Last Waltz . Later he worked on projects like Apocalypse Now , The Party is over ... The sequel to American Graffiti and the Neil Young documentary Rust Never Sleeps . In 1984 he received the Boston Society of Film Critics Award and the National Society of Film Critics Award for his camerawork on When the Wolves Howl . In 1989 he was the cameraman for the visual effects for the Steven Spielberg film Always - The Fire Angel of Montana . In the years that followed, he photographed successful films as head cameraman like Liebling, I've Shrunk the Children , Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Land and Rocketeer .
