Dirty Pictures is a television-produced feature film by American director Frank Pierson from 2000 . The drama is based on the legal proceedings surrounding the Mapplethorpe exhibition The Perfect Moment in Cincinnati .

Museum curator Dennis Barrie ( James Woods ) falls into the crosshairs of Sheriff Simon Leis ( Craig T. Nelson ), who tries everything to have Berrie tried in the course of a lawsuit, because of his decision to hold a controversial photo exhibition . As the public controversy over freedom and the moral limits of art escalates, Barrie's marriage is in danger and his daughter is physically assaulted. The competent court finally comes to the conclusion that the issue was legal.
