Frank Pierson

Frank Romer Pierson (born May 12, 1925 in Chappaqua , New York , † July 23, 2012 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American screenwriter , film director and film producer .

Frank Pierson was born in Chappaqua in 1925 as the son of the entrepreneur Harold C. Pierson and the writer Louise Randall Pierson. The life of his family was made into a film by Michael Curtiz in 1945 under the title An Entrepreneurial Woman . As a young man, he had to fight in the Pacific War as a World War II soldier . After attending the well-known Harvard University , he worked as a correspondent for Time and Life Magazine , and began his career in film and television in 1958, initially as a story editor .
In 1959 he wrote his first of eight scripts for the western series Have Gun - Will Travel , and was also responsible as a producer for 17 episodes.
In 1965 he wrote the screenplay for Cat Ballou with Walter Newman , and in 1966 it was nominated for the first time for an Oscar in the category Best Adapted Screenplay . Two years later, in 1968, Donn Pearce was his second nomination in the same category, this time for the film The Unyielding . In 1976 he received his third and so far last nomination, but this time in the category Best Original Screenplay . But now he was able to receive the coveted gold statue for his film Dog Days .
With a few exceptions, his work as a director was limited to television films. His best-known films were A Star Is Born in 1976 and the 1978 drama King of the Gypsies . In 2001 he also directed Die Wannsee Conference , a film that was shot in Germany .
Frank Pierson served as the first presidency of the Writers Guild of America from 1981 to 1983 , and served in the same capacity from 1993 to 1995. From August 2001 to August 2005 he was President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences .
He was married three times. His first marriage to Polly Stokes, which he entered into in September 1948, was divorced, as was his marriage to the author Dori Defner, with whom he stepped off the altar in December 1978. Since June 1990 he was married to Helene Szamet. The marriage resulted in two children, son Michael and daughter Eve.
