Tom Sherak

Tom Sherak (born June 22, 1945 in New York City , New York - † January 28, 2014 in Calabasas , California ) was an American film producer . He was President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences from 2009 to 2012 .

Life

Tom Sherak grew up in Brooklyn . During the Vietnam War he was drafted into the military, but only had to spend two years as a personnel specialist at Fort Monroe , Virginia . For a short time he worked on Wall Street . In 1970 Sherak began his career in the film industry. He initially worked in Paramount Pictures' film distribution offices in New York, Washington, DC and St. Louis . He then became chief film buyer for the General Cinema Corporation . He joined 20th Century Fox in 1983 . There he worked in distribution, marketing and post-production for over 18 years , most recently in the position of Chairman of the 20th Century Fox Domestic Film Group . He then worked as a partner at Revolution Studios for seven years .

Tom Sherak had been a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for many years when he was appointed to its Board of Governors in 2003. He was treasurer for one term. From 2009 to 2012 he was President of the Academy. He was succeeded by Hawk Koch . In 2010 Sherak received an honorary doctorate from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco . In November 2013, he started a job in the Los Angeles City Council for a salary of one US dollar per year, where he was supposed to incentivize the continued existence of the film and television industry in Hollywood.

Sherak was also known for his involvement with multiple sclerosis charities. His daughter Melissa has multiple sclerosis.

In 2001 Sherak was diagnosed with prostate cancer. After undergoing intensive chemotherapy in 2013, his health deteriorated again in early 2014. He died at the end of January 2014 at the age of 68. He left his wife and two daughters and a son.
