Sidney "Sid" Ganis (born January 8, 1940 in Brooklyn , New York City ) is an American film producer and film actor .

Life

As a teenager, Ganis worked as an errand boy and clerk for the US PR agent Lee Solters , who in turn had worked for Frank Sinatra for 26 years . In collaboration with George Lucas , Ganis later founded his film production company Lucasfilm , of which he was vice president for many years. He later moved to the two well-known studios Columbia and Paramount , both of which he headed as president in the 1980s and early 1990s. From 1991 to 1996 Ganis was in the marketing department of Sony Pictures Entertainment . Ganis has also been on the publisher's supervisory board since 1999Marvel Comics .

In September 1996 he founded Out of the Blue ... Entertainment , a studio specializing in the production of comedies such as Big Daddy (1999) and Mr. Deeds (2002). Similar to Alfred Hitchcock in his films, Ganis also took on a small supporting role from time to time in his produced films or had a cameo appearance .

Sid Ganis' reputation, but also his experience in film marketing, benefited him in 2005 when he was elected President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences . Until 2009 he was the one who organized the annual Oscar awards and was responsible for the smooth running of the ceremonies. In 2009 he was replaced by Tom Sherak in his office.

Ganis is a Democrat and campaigned for US presidential candidate John Kerry in 2004 . Little is known about the film producer's private life. He is married to the film producer and charity lady Nancy Hult.
