action

The action begins in Italy in 1979: Fabbrizio Disguisey, the last of a long line of agents known as "Metamorphosis Masters", blows up a smuggling ring run by the evil Devlin Bowman. He is arrested and Fabbrizio decides to keep the family art of dressing up a secret from his son Pistachio in order to protect him.

23 years later, Pistachio works as a nice, if clumsy waiter in his parents' Ristorante. Bowman, who has just been released from prison, kidnaps Fabbrizio and mother Disguisey. Fabbrizio is said to use his skills to steal legendary art objects from around the world for Bowman. But after Fabbrizio's disappearance, Grandfather Disguisey appears and informs the previously unsuspecting Pistachio about the family secret. He begins to train Pistachio hard. After learning the basics, Pistachio sets off with his assigned assistant Jennifer Baker to put Bowman's trade down and free his parents.

The two find one of Bowman's cigars and recognize his plan. They also find out that Bowman will be at an antiques fair the next day. Pistachio and Jennifer go to mass, with Pistachio disguised as an older woman. Bowman invites Jennifer to a party at his house. Pistachio appears at the party in disguise, distracting Bowman while Jennifer searches for clues. That night, Pistachio and Jennifer search the clues they find. Pistachio brings Jennifer home and the two kiss. However, Jennifer is kidnapped by Bowman's henchmen.

Pistachio then breaks into his house to save Jennifer and his parents. Bowman put a mask on his own face and brainwashed Fabbrizio into believing himself to be Bowman. This is how the real Bowman escapes while Pistachio fights with his father. Pistachio manages to wake his father out of the trance, they free mother Disguisey and bring back the stolen art objects. Pistachio marries Jennifer and becomes an official "Master of Transformation". However, Bowman still has the United States Constitution . The Disguiseys track down Bowman, defeat him and bring the constitution back.

Reviews

Master of Transformation received very bad reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes , only one of 103 reviews was positive, which corresponds to a rating of 1%. The bottom line of the site says the film is a "poorly thought out attempt to use Dana Carvey's talent for imitation" and also "an annoying, pointless farce". The film was also received rather negatively by the general public, as only 31% of users rated the film positively. This is clearly confirmed by the online film archive Internet Movie Database , another platform on which normal users can cast their votes, because there the film was rated with an average of just 3.3 out of 10 possible points. (As of November 30, 2017 with 19,110 votes cast) On Metacritic , the film received a rating of 12% based on 24 reviews.

Roger Ebert praised the production design in the Chicago Sun-Times of August 2, 2002, but said the film itself was a "hopeless miscalculation". He doesn't give “poor” Dana Carvey anything to do that is really funny, but expects people to laugh because Carvey is playing “silly”. Ebert compared Master of Metamorphosis in one sentence to a party guest who thought he was funny but was wrong.

James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that Dana Carvey had proven in the past that he was an extremely "capable" comedian, which, given this "75-minute example of childish rubbish," one would never guess. Berardinelli scoffed that in order to be able to laugh during the screening of the film, one had to take a can full of nitrous oxide to the cinema.

The lexicon of international films wrote: “An attempt at a satire on the action cinema, which after initial silliness is gaining momentum and turning into an entertaining travesty, with shrill flaps and embarrassing jokes predominating. After all, the film largely avoids slippery nonsense. "

Awards

Bo Derek was nominated for the Golden Raspberry in the Worst Supporting Actress category. The film also won the Stinker Award for Most Painfully Unfunny Comedy .
