The Dimitroula was a ferry of the Greek shipping company GA Ferries , which was commissioned in 1978 as Verga for the Italian Tirrenia - Compagnia italiana di navigazione . The ship remained in service until September 2008 and was scrapped in Aliağa, Turkey in 2011 .
history
The Verga was built under construction number 4346 at Italcantieri in Castellammare di Stabia and was launched on September 10, 1977. After its delivery to the Tirrenia in October 1978, the ship began ferry service off the Italian east coast.
In February 1997 the Verga was sold to the Greek shipping company GA Ferries and renamed Dimitroula . In the same year she took up the service between Thessaloniki , Crete and the Sporades . In 1999 the ship switched to the route from Piraeus via the Cyclades and Dodecanese to Alexandroupoli .
On September 8, 2008, the Dimitroula had to be retired from GA Ferries due to financial difficulties. From then on, it was laid up in Piraeus before it was sold for scrapping in August 2011 after almost three years. On August 30, 2011, the ship was towed to Aliağa, Turkey, for demolition.
The sister ship of the Verga was the Deledda , also commissioned in 1978 , which had been called Zhong Yuan since 1994 and was scrapped in Chittagong in 2008 .
