Edie McClurg (* 23. July 1945 in Kansas City , Missouri as Edith M. McClurg ) is an American actress .

Life

Edie McClurg grew up in Missouri and initially wanted to be a teacher. She completed her studies at the University of Missouri – Kansas City , where she subsequently taught radio work for eight years. During this time she also worked as a presenter and news anchor for KCUR-FM , a national public radio station in Kansas . Eventually she moved to California near her brother, where she completed another degree, but at the same time discovered her interest in improvisational theater. She became a member of the well-known comedian group "The Groundlings" in Los Angeles , which she stayed for ten years.

Since the mid-1970s, Edie McClurg appeared in a total of over 200 film and television productions, mostly in supporting comedic roles. She had her first major television role as the wife of David Huddleston's main character in the short-lived sitcom The Kallikaks (1977). She was also a cast member of David Letterman's The David Letterman Show (1980), a predecessor to his much more successful show Late Night with David Letterman . Between 1986 and 1991 she played the somewhat pushy but friendly neighbor Patricia Poole in 88 episodes of the series The Hogan Clan . Over the course of her decade-long career, McClurg has guest roles on popular series such as Seinfeld , A Terribly Nice Family , Full House , Roseanne , Navy CIS , Malcolm in the Middle , Hannah Montana , Desperate Housewives, and Two and a Half Men .

The red-haired character actress was often used as a curious, sometimes simple-minded neighbor, relative or middle-aged secretary. So, although she rarely got bigger roles, she achieved a high recognition value. Her Midwestern accent became another trademark. Occasionally Edie McClurg was seen in serious and dramatic roles: In the television film Bill: On His Own , she played a mentally disabled woman at the side of Mickey Rooney in 1983 , for which she received the National Media Award .

She made her movie debut in 1976 in Brian De Palma's Carrie - Satan's Youngest Daughter, with a small role as Helen Shyres . In the 1980s she starred in a number of comedies made with the participation of John Hughes : In 1986 she played Grace , the cheerful secretary of the school principal, in Ferris macht blau , and a year later she was one of the employees in One Ticket for Two Car rental to see Steve Martin's character in its place.
