A terribly nice family (original title: Married ... with Children ) is an American sitcom that the broadcaster Fox produced from 1987 to 1997 with 259 episodes in eleven seasons. The protagonists of the series are the Bundys, a lower-middle-class family of four who live in a suburb of Chicago in the US state of Illinois .

In Germany, the series ran from 1992 to May 1996 initially on RTL , the last 51 episodes were broadcast on ProSieben from October 1996 to December 1997 . From 1995 to 1999, the series in Austria was ORF 1 integral part of the evening program, since 2006, various seasons on cable one , one cable classics , ProSieben, ProSieben Maxx , Comedy Central Germany , 3+ , ATV , ORF 1 and RTL NITRO to see.

content

The series follows the everyday life of the Bundys. Al Bundy is a retired high school football player who lived his life from scoring four touchdowns in a single game at Polk High School and has been forced to make a family living selling women's shoes since his marriage; His wife Peggy, who is always unwilling to work, is known for her high-teased red hair, kitschy / trashy clothes and her strong aversion to her own household; finally their children Kelly  - their always dumb and celebrity daughter - and Bud , the very intelligent but always unsuccessful youngest member of the family.

Like a chamber play , the series focuses on the sofa in the Bundy family's living room.

More or less welcome guests in their home are the neighbor Marcy Rhoades (after remarrying D'Arcy) , a well-paid bank clerk with feminist to man- hating views, as well as her first and later second husband Steve and Jefferson .

background

Although A Terribly Nice Family achieved high ratings from the start and helped the station FOX to make its long-awaited breakthrough in the television landscape, the series was always controversial. Because of their sometimes bawdy humor , the stereotypical gender stereotypes (such as the blonde bimbo with the random affairs or the flat-chested, feminist neighbor, with a submissive is married husband) introduced the sitcom to widespread boycotts (including through the housewife Terry Rakolta from Michigan , which in the late 1980s attracted a lot of media interest due to its protests in the USA) - but mostly in vain, because the "bad press" made it even more popular among viewers. The whole thing was even more or less turned into an episode. In episode 192 (season 9, episode 9; No Pot to pease in German: Bundys times two ) the life of the Bundys is transformed into a very successful TV series. However, this will be discontinued after a short time because "a woman in Michigan did not like it".

Divine was slated to play Al Bundy's uncle Otto on the series when he died unexpectedly. The 22nd episode of the second season was dedicated to him.

characters

The Bundys

Al Bundy

Ed O'Neill (2010)

Al, the not-recognized head of the family, is a former successful football player at the fictional Polk High School in Chicago. Playing in the fullback (number 33) position, he once scored "four touchdowns in a single game" - a story he tells in many of the series' episodes. He also won the 1966 Chicago City Championship with Polk High after an unbeaten season and was studying to college on an athletic scholarship until he met Peggy Wanker, whom he made pregnant (the multiple-use condom burst) and married. As a result, he was forced to make his summer job as a women's shoe seller in "Gary's Shoes and Accessories" his main occupation. That is why Al regards both "Peg" (whom he regularly wishes death or other unpleasantness on his neck) and his two children Kelly and Bud as the greatest evil of his life, a view that he ascribes to the specially published wisdom "Never marry!" Basically ("I feel like Exxon : an effusion and I'll pay for it until the end of my life." ( Al Bundy )). Small pleasures like his “ Dodge ”, his “Boobs Magazine” (“Big 'Uns”), his loo (an original Ferguson), beer, bowling , a juicy steak (rather seldom, since Peggy never actually cooks) or a visit to the Local Nacktbar ("The Jiggly Room") keep his will to live so far that he does not commit suicide. He also enjoys insulting fat customers in the shoe store: “I don't sell shoes for the money. I am here to torture fat women ”( Al Bundy ). Al is drawn to beautiful women and is often paralyzed by them, leaving him speechless. Still, Al never cheats on his wife. On the contrary: encounters of this kind increase the sexual desire for his wife, although he detests sex with Peggy. The family lives in a comparatively respectable house that doesn't really fit in with a shoe seller who is constantly living on the subsistence level.

Logo of NO MA'AM

Al Bundy is a ridiculously patriotic American who drives a scrap-ripe '74 Dodge Dart Sport (which is never washed and serviced for lack of money), but who blasphemes Japanese cars, hates the French and, contrary to all common sense, old-fashioned values of society holds on. So he works for the minimum wage, which just enables him to feed his family and accepts scorn, ridicule and humiliation - even from his own family - in return. On the other hand, like his family, he is by no means averse to forgetting these higher ideals when it comes to his own advantage: For example, he regularly steals the newspaper or the gasoline from their Mercedes from neighbors Steve or Jefferson and Marcy. Al Bundy's attempts to improve his life are always marked by bad luck and therefore invariably fail. In many other respects, too, his life is made more difficult by the fact that his family, neighbors (especially Marcy), fate and work are badly hurting him. The never-ending ordeal and the constant quarrels from different sides, but above all from his family, are a central part of the series and mostly even the subject of the individual episodes.

Nevertheless, Al knows how to take care of his family in an emergency: Among other things, he tries to ensure that daughter Kelly does not get into bad circles through her friends (he regularly beats up her visitors and lets them run into walls or the front door), Son Bud does not make the same mistakes as he does himself and in the worst case scenario, Ms. Peggy gets what she really wants - regardless of whether it is sex or just money . He also takes care of his sick daughter in the episode "Al and Kelly alone at home" (even if she shamelessly takes advantage of this) and inevitably sacrifices his entire Peggy-free weekend for it. He also has a picture of his family in the trunk of his car.

With his friends, who are also frustrated losers, Al founds the association NO MA'AM (originally created to put an end to the male feminist Jerry Springer ), of which he is chairman. This acronym ( no : "no" or "no (e)") and English ma'am (from "Madam (e)"): a salutation for women) stands for English. N ational O rganization of M en A gainst A Amazonian M Masterhood  - "National Organization of Men Against Amazon -Machtausübung".

In a cover story about The 70 best series heroes of all time in the December 2011 German edition of the music magazine Rolling Stone , in which Al Bundy lands in 45th place, journalist Frank Schäfer writes: “The disaffected White Trash patriarch who loves his little bit Would have learned to defend in a funny dialogue fight with the world, has something heroic about it. "

Margaret "Peggy" Bundy

Katey Sagal (1989)

Margaret "Peg (gy)" Bundy, born Wanker from the fictional Wanker County, Wisconsin (English wanker "wanker"), is Al Bundy's striking red-haired wife and mother of his two children Kelly and Bud. While her husband sees her as the main cause of his botched life, Peggy blames Al for her life in the upper lower class - but she strictly refuses to contribute anything to the family's income and support. Al also thinks she shouldn't work because the Bundy family has never had a woman work. She sees herself as a housewife, but without ever cooking, cleaning or washing. Before going to a restaurant, Al warns his children that something will happen there that they have never seen before: a woman will give them something to eat.

Peg spends most of her time scouring the house for her husband's money hiding, watching talk shows like Oprah and the Phil Donahue Show from her beloved couch, and eating candy or chocolates. In the early episodes, she smokes, which cannot be seen later.

Although Al shows little interest in her appearance, Peggy tries to appear attractive to others despite her fondness for white-trash clothing . She has to force her husband to have sex; he avoids it at every opportunity and always finds excuses and ways to escape his wife in this regard. However, since Peggy longs for satisfaction and is loyal to her husband at least in this regard, conflicts arise between the spouses on several occasions. In order to get at least partial satisfaction, she wastes a large part of the income to buy some kind of junk. Her shopping frenzy and the associated strain on the family household are a recurring theme in the episodes, as it happens again and again that Peg overdrawns her husband's credit card and thus gets him into trouble more than once. In addition, there are multiple allusions to masturbation from her side. Especially when talking to her friend and neighbor Marcy.

Peggy's birthday is April 12th (mentioned in the 249th episode Scheiden Hurts ). In real life, this is Ed O'Neill's birthday.

Kelly Bundy

Christina Applegate (2004)

Kelly is the Bundy's oldest child and is considered the naive and stereotypical blonde of the series. The constant titling as " dumb cheek " by her father in the German-language dubbing seems to underline this. In the original, however, Al calls them “pumpkin”, literally “pumpkin”, which as a salutation means something like “little mouse” or “treasure” and is affectionate, not offensive.

As later flashbacks (season 11, episode Car on Drip ) show, she was an amazingly intelligent child up to the age of six who had read a lot and had already caused his parents Al and Peggy some worries. That changed, however, when Kelly hit her head while driving and had to deal with a severe learning disability . She processes this trauma with frequently changing male acquaintances (who almost always correspond to the rocker cliché). Although this underscores her precociousness, Kelly also harbors childlike traits: She is interested in Garfield comics and cartoon series such as Bugs Bunny or Bullwinkle , the elk , among others . Professionally, Kelly (after graduating from high school in 1990) worked at times as a waitress, model, dancer, weather fairy, exterminator ( verminator ) and actress.

Occasionally, the series alludes to their nickname "Pumpkin". Due to the imprecise translation, these gags lose their wit. As in the entire series, there are also some puns from Kelly ( "Mom, when did you go through, you know ... mental pause?" Or "'Kelly, it's" science ". The" C "is silent.' - 'Oh, I know I should've stayed in… shool. '“ ) To translate poorly or only imprecisely.

The indication of her birthday is inconsistent: between February 1st and 19th ("My birthday is in February. I'm an aquarium." ( Kelly Bundy ) (Latin / English: "Aquarius": " Aquarius ")) or between April 30th and May 5th (in the 56th episode Days at the Beach it is the first Sunday in May and Kelly's birthday was the day before) or on November 27th (mentioned in episode 130 Every Bundy has a birthday ).

Budrick Franklin Bundy

David Faustino (2007)

Budrick "Bud" Franklin is Kelly's younger brother. Since he is not very successful with women, he always thinks about new ways and tactics to increase his chances with the "chicks" (in the original: "chicks" and "babes"). His most successful alter ego is - in allusion to the DJ " Grandmaster Flash " - "Grand Master B". In addition to many setbacks, he actually achieved some success with the image of the lonely street gangster (whose "story of origin" - as the series itself is stated - is similar to the story of The Prince of Bel Air ). At this point the series is contradicting itself, as Bud is mostly portrayed as the virgin - who doesn't get any - although he often has different and quite attractive girlfriends (who seem to be his first every time). In womenless times Bud seeks consolation in his "only girlfriend", the inflatable sex doll Isis , who above all inspires Kelly to ever new taunts and at the most inopportune moment causes one or the other embarrassment (Kelly looks into Bud's girlfriend's neck and says: "Well, no valve? This is really something new!"). He avenges himself for the taunts and exposures by often selling them for stupid ("Bud, tell my friend I'm not here." - "Tell him yourself, Kelly!" - "Oky, doky."). In his first real sexual contact with women, such as Amber (a niece of Marcy D'Arcy) or the French exchange student, they attest to his great lover qualities.

Despite his family background, Bud is considered the most successful offspring of the family: In contrast to the school failure Kelly, he graduated from high school with awards and later successfully completed his studies at Trumaine University. His birthday is January 22nd (mentioned in the 130th episode Every Bundy has a birthday ).

Since his family shows him no respect or affection, he has no qualms about betraying them. For example, when Kelly hooks up with a member of parliament who sees her only as an affair, he sells secretly taken photos of the two to the press, even though the family does benefit from the affair. But if he has to take a direct stand, he always stands by his family and especially Kelly and his father Al. Together with him he shows amazing skills in street fights.

Buck / Lucky

Buck is the first dog in the family. His “thoughts” are often faded into the series in the form of voiceovers to comment on various situations. In the third episode of the tenth season Buck dies (it was decided that the twelve and a half years old Briard to take because of his age from the series, he died about nine months later), the cat enemy because of his life as a punishment in the form of Spaniels "Lucky" reborn and lives in this form again with the Bundys. The German dubbing voice remained unchanged when he switched from Buck to Lucky to make the reincarnation clear. In the US original, however, the voice changed.

The neighbours

Marcy D'Arcy, initially Marcy Rhoades

Marcy is the Bundy's and Peg's best friend. She sees herself well above the level of her neighbors, but often enough falls to the same level through her actions. Marcy works in a bank and is demoted several times because of Al. At the beginning of the series there is still a woman who is convinced of equality in marriage, she transforms from season to season more and more into a feminist who knows how to counter targeted hostility. after all, she only sees him as a prime example of a failure - and she treats him accordingly. As a running gag , Marcy is not only referred to as a "chicken" in the entire series of Al ("Jefferson, you got something from the Chinese restaurant."; "Unlike yours, my legs are not served as a delicacy."; " Let me explain something to you Marcy: Took, tok, tok, tok, tok, took! "), But also with allusions to her small bust size (" It's a miracle, what else could keep the towel up? "). She avenges herself with allusions to his earnings, foot odor and hair loss and sometimes involuntarily with the presentation of her non-existent bust (Al: "I am blind! My eyes! God in heaven! My eyes!"; "Now I don't like the food anymore . "). As a further running gag, Marcy is often mistaken for a man by strangers because of her missing bust and short hairstyle ("cabin boy", "ship girl boy", "guy with the dubious gender"; "Would the gentleman in the third row please sit down?" ). If at the beginning of the series she mostly wears knee-covering skirts and dresses, the skirts are a little shorter at first, which emphasizes her increased self-confidence, but often disappear completely in the later episodes in favor of pants. In some episodes she then behaves like a man (knocks out Steve, Jefferson and the approaching Bud with one blow; drinks with Al brotherhood; blasphemes the opposite sex as pretty, useless wasters of money). Marcy is the chairman of the women's group FANG (Feminists against Neanderthal Guys, fang = fang).

Marcy, in the course of the series of her first husband Steve is left and later married in Vollsuff unemployed Jefferson D'Arcy, grants Bundy periodically insight into traumatic events of her childhood, and frequently alluded to the fact that they psychotropic drugs against this takes flashbacks triggered by various triggers .

Steven Bartholomew Rhoades

David Garrison (2008)

Steven Bartholomew Rhoades is Marcy's first husband and, like his wife, a bank clerk. Like Marcy, he considers himself superior to the Bundys in every way; nevertheless he often sits on the sofa with Al and lets him explain the world to him. Steve is initially convinced of the principle of marital equality and adheres unconditionally to Marcy ("If you are a chicken, let me be your rooster."). However, the further Marcy develops in the feminist direction, the more Steve develops into a macho under Als influence . An example of this is the spontaneous purchase of an old Ford Mustang  - without consulting his wife.

In the course of the fourth season, Steve loses his position because of a failed loan that he brokered to Al to win an internal bank competition. To Marcy's annoyance, he discovers the merits of unemployment and goes on trips with Peg and the children instead of looking for a new job. After visiting the zoo, he believes that he has found his new calling as a conservationist. He leaves Marcy and goes to the mountains as a ranger (in fact, David Garrison left the series to pursue his career on Broadway). In a later episode, he is wanted by the FBI for stealing a rare bird's egg that he rescued from the research laboratory as a ranger in the park. In his old home, unaware of Marcy's remarriage, he creates chaos that the Bundys wanted. A little later he is arrested by the FBI. In subsequent episodes, he turned his back on nature conservation and worked as a chauffeur and dean at Bud's later college.

Jefferson Millhouse D'Arcy

Jefferson Millhouse D'Arcy is Marcy's second husband (from episode 92), whom she meets after separating from Steve at a banker party and then spontaneously married in a completely drunk state. Despite the initial inconsistencies, Marcy learns to accept the avowed sonnyboy and daredevil - even if he (similar to Peg's male likeness), contrary to Marcy's ideas, always shuns work and rather seems concerned about his appearance. Jefferson is also a member of NO MA'AM. If the situation for NO MA'AM gets precarious and Marcy shows up, Jefferson always has a YES MA'AM T-shirt ready to change under his NO MA'AM T-shirt. Even with chicken jokes about Marcy, he laughs behind her back and gets serious as soon as she turns around. The constellation of the Bundy neighbors gets a special pun from Jefferson's last name, which is expressed in a combination of “Marcy D'Arcy” (alluding to the producer of the major competition series Roseanne , Marcy Carsey).

As the course of the series occasionally becomes apparent through dubious circumstances, Jefferson was obviously working for the CIA long before his marriage . However, he was fired when an attempt to assassinate Fidel Castro failed. After that he made a career as a cheater at times; Among other things, he sold uninhabitable properties on Lake Chicamacamico due to toxic waste, for which he had to go to jail. His confession in jail to Al is revealed to Marcy despite his assurances. In return, Al learns why his retirement property was so cheap. McGinley had previously made a guest appearance in the double episode Merry Christmas : In this, a guardian angel (played by Sam Kinison , who was originally intended for the role of Al Bundy) shows what Als Familie would have become if Al hadn't existed. There Ted McGinley plays Peggy's alternative husband Norman Jablonsky.

It is never really explained whether Jefferson worked for or against the CIA. When Al Bundy needed spare parts for his scrap car, Jefferson got them from Cuba. It can be clearly seen that he has a very friendly relationship with Fidel Castro and both appear together at a rally at which Fidel Castro calls on his compatriots to get the necessary spare parts for his friend, the oppressed American, what who then do too.

When Al Bundy moves to Washington to put a canceled television series ( Psycho Dad ) back on the program, Jefferson can easily open all doors for Al, is courted by the Secret Service and even the United States Senate interrupts its session to ask him or her Give Al Bundy speaking time.

Handle

Griff is an African American friend of Al and his colleague in the women's shoe business. He is also a member of the NO MA'AM organization as he has been strictly against marriage since his divorce, which completely ruined him. He therefore does not have a surname, as his wife also got the same when they divorced. Griff won't appear until later seasons after Al worked alone in the shoe store for years. Al already had a few colleagues at his side over a few episodes

  • Luke Ventura (played by Ritch Shydner ), a bon vivant - Season 1
  • Aaron (played by Hill Harper ), a fresh and very capable Polk High graduate looking to start his career - Season 8
  • Dexter (played by Chi McBride ), whose background is not elaborated - Season 8. All that is known about him is that he is married to an overweight woman named Laura.

However, these three disappeared again very quickly - mostly for no reason. They are only mentioned briefly later, e.g. B. Luke Ventura in the episode directed by Al Bundy (9th season), when he appears in the shoe news with a picture, which annoys Al, because he also wants to see his name in the newspaper. Griff stayed on until the end of the series As a Friend and Colleague, despite a prank played by Al to mark his one-year membership in NO MA'AM at the end of season 10 and nearly get him executed in the electric chair . It is interesting that Griff and Al are just as unsuccessful in selling shoes as Al alone, but without him, he definitely demonstrates sales qualities.

Bob Rooney

Bob Rooney is a NO-MA'AM member and treasurer there. He works as a butcher and is said to be a skilled craftsman, but his appearance in the search for the function of the "mysterious light switch" raises doubts, as he ends up in the Bundy's house wall and cannot get out for days. His name “Bobrooney” is written on his bowling team shirt , and in fact, he is never addressed without a surname.

Officer Dan

Dan is a cop and a friend of Al. He tries again and again to reconcile his duties as a cop and his friendship with Al. He clears Jerry Springer's house occupied by the "NO MA'AM" brothers, but orders that the "male feminist" who is tied up by Al and his cronies remain tied up ( "I can't stand this guy." ) . Later he joins the NO-MA'AM association. Over time, you learn from his private life that he is married and has several children. His wife Danielle appeared in the second episode Brothers, Fathers and Mafiosi in season 10 and was played by Kym Whitley .

Ike

Ike is a sergeant for the NO MA'AM club. He always attracts attention with stupid questions. He's also frustrated that his marriage to Frannie is final, even though he was married in an opium den by a nudist minister named Reverend Flashback . Ike is also a fan of Elvis Presley and believes he is still alive. Ike appears for the first time in the ninth season, at the same time as Griff. His first episodes were The Naked Bar and The Baseball Strike .

Roger Andersson

Roger is a friend of Al and a member of the "NO MA'AM" club. He and Al are fond of offending each other's wives. He starred in two episodes: The Male Feminist and The Idol . He was played by Chris Latta .

Barney

Barney appeared in six episodes between seasons one and eight. He is one of as pals and was subsequently Earnings also as a poker friend. Like Roger, he was one of the first members of NO MA'AM. He only appeared in two episodes as a "NO MA'AM" member: The Male Feminist and The Idol . He was played by Steve Susskind .

Stan

Stan is also a friend of Al and a member of the "NO MA'AM" club.

Amber

Amber is the very handsome niece of Marcy, who visits her aunt and stays with her for some time because she has to deal with the wrong people and bad friends in her hometown. Bud immediately tries to land with her, but the very self-confident Amber only pays attention to him in his dreams. After a short time, Bud's dreams come true and the very sex-hungry Amber starts a relationship with him. The initiative comes from Amber, who climbs through Bud's window by means of a ladder and seduces him again and again. Amber attests to Bud's great qualities as a lover and is addicted to him. Amber disappears after a few episodes, allegedly because Marcy has discovered her and suspects something about the relationship with Bud. It was played by Juliet Marie Tablak .

Miranda Veracruz de la Jolla Cardinal

(other spelling: Miranda Veracruz de la Hoya Cardinal)
Miranda is a reporter of Ecuadorian origin who is always there when there is something to report on TV about the Bundys or the “NO MA'AM” club. She always introduces herself correctly with her full name. According to her own statement, she once slept with the wrong manager, was then not taken into account when assigning the interesting areas of responsibility and is now desperate that the Bundy topics are ruining her own career. Her greatest wish is to become a very successful presenter one day, but that will not happen until the end of the series. It was played by Teresa Parente .

Fawn

Fawn is a former school friend of Kelly's and is known for sleeping with every man and for her normal everyday life being nothing but sex ("Isn't she in the Guinness Book of Records under sex?" ( Bud Bundy )). She has a job as a buyer. Another quote from Bud: "It used to be the other way around, she sold herself." She was played by Lisa Boyle and appeared in a total of four episodes in season 10.

Ashley

Ashley is also a former school friend of Kelly's and like the two of them, Ashley is not very intelligent either. Their sex lives are almost as pronounced as Kelly and Fawn's. Bud is in love with her for a while. When he wants to go out with her, however, all he finds is insulting news on her doorstep. She appeared in three episodes in the tenth season and was played by Heidi Mark .

Achmed

Achmed is one of Bud's friends and stands out with his oriental-sounding pronunciation. He is played by Kyle Simon Parker and appeared in this role in 3 episodes. In Bud's desperate search , he was a member of Bud's self-established student union in order to tow girls away, but that didn't work. In the double episode Ab to Florida , he and his friends Bud, Barney and Hummer wanted to go to Fort Lauderdale for the spring break , but Kelly and her friends relieved them of their flight tickets, whereupon Bud and the others swore vengeance and followed suit. Achmed works in a kiosk, the "Quickies Market", and he is a fan of America, which you can see in his summer casual clothes in the double episodes Ab to Florida .

seven

Seven (in the original Seven ) is a six-year-old blond boy, the seventh child of Peg's cousin Ida Mae and her husband Seamus. In the first episode of season 7 he is left behind by his parents with the Bundys, whereupon he happily settles there and is finally even adopted by Al. Despite his cute and innocent appearance, he behaves manipulatively and insidiously atypical of his age, his statements resemble the sarcasms of the adolescent Bud. Peggy adores him, much to the displeasure of all the other Bundys.

His role should allow Kelly and Bud to continue established patterns as they grew up, but it proved difficult to fit him into the adult sitcom context. After the 4th episode of the 7th season he appeared only as an insignificant marginal figure and shortly thereafter disappeared completely from the series after 80% of those questioned had spoken out against his role in a survey.

In a later episode, Sieben is printed as a missing child on a carton of milk that Bud drinks from. A search advertisement for the Lindbergh baby , who was found dead in May 1932, was printed on the same milk carton that the Bundys had previously and kept filling up with tap water .

The Wankers

Ephraim Wanker (English wanker : "wanker") and his overweight wife are the parents of Peggy; they are hillbilly folks who live in books and live on a shabby farm in Wanker County . They regard their daughter's marriage to the city dweller Al as an ascent. Peggy's mother is often mentioned as an extremely fat ("380 pounds", elsewhere, "3.5 tons, and now she's afraid she'll get fat!") Woman whose real name is never mentioned. Although she lives with the Bundys for a while, you never see her. But it makes itself noticeable that the entire house shakes when it moves, the railing of the stairs at Als Haus is bent or she complains loudly that she has nothing more to eat. In one episode, she works for a phone sex hotline and pretends to be "Lillie Ramer", whom As a buddy Griff falls in love with before he finds out who she really is. Peggy's father starred in a couple of episodes. Among other things, Al goes bear hunting with him to persuade him to save his marriage so that Peggy's mother can finally leave his house. A few family members of Peg, all marked by degeneration and incest , come to visit in some episodes and cause chaos. Among others, in episode 35, The Terrible Relatives , the last episode of the second season, Peggy's uncles and aunts appear: the overweight Irwin (played by King Kong Bundy ), the gender-mysterious Otto (played by James Gypsy Haake ) and the Wanker triplets (played from the Del Rubio Triplets ). Peggy's mother is only told that she is there.

Except for the father, the relatives are always different characters. Peggy's father is played by comedian Tim Conway .

In the episode One Pound Birthday, Peggy told of her aunt Edna, who was eaten by Peggy's mother because she was too close to dessert.

A homeless man

Every now and then he appears on the show and asks for change. Most of the time he is somehow involved in the events, sometimes as a bad example (“Peggy, here is someone who wants to tell you that a school leaving certificate is not important.”), Sometimes as a distraction for unpopular competition (“That's the drummer of the Group, 15 minutes with him and you have the role ”) and for Steve, to show his disdain for Al by giving him the 5 dollars Al had given to double (“ Do good, good things will happen to you too ”). But the shot backfired because a horde of bums followed him afterwards.

Luke Ventura

Luke is Al's work colleague in the shoe store, to which he is the stark counterpart. He is relatively young and successful with women. He tries at every opportunity to hit on the young women around him and always has success. After the first season, in which he made a few appearances, he disappears from the series. In episode 23 of the ninth season ("Director: Al Bundy") he is mentioned as a nuisance recipient of an award.

Psycho dad

Psycho Dad is Favorite TV Show (the main character on that show has been wearing the same "Psycho" suit for seven years) which, according to Marcy, has an average of 84 murders per episode. In addition, Psycho Dad is said to have "accidentally" shot President Lincoln in one of the programs, because he actually wanted to meet his wife, but she ducked at the last moment. By the way, in the Christmas episode you can find out how exactly the eight reindeer heads on the wall of his hut came about. In a later episode, the announcement of Psycho Dads on television said that "now there is less violence but more absurd sex and nudity for a clean and healthy America." Al and his NO MA'AM friends never missed an episode until Marcy and her women's group ( hereinafter referred to as We want Psycho Dad, I ) obtained the cancellation of the series due to a letter of protest to the responsible broadcaster because of excessive violence. Al and his friends then counter-protest and demand reactivation. Finally, the lead actor in the series Psycho Dad holds a press conference in which he reads an embarrassing fan letter from Al and cites it as a reason for quitting Psycho Dad forever. In the sequel We Want Psycho Dad, II , Al and his cronies went as far as Washington to petition the United States Senate to reactivate Psycho Dad . The Senate rejected this application because of the excessive potential for violence.

The Swedish punk 'n' roll band The Bones released a track entitled Psycho Dad on their EP Partners In Crime Vol. 1 in 2006 . This takes up the text fragments known from the series and the melody.

Development of the series and the characters

Of Married with Children , there are 259 episodes in 11 seasons.

Season 1 (1987)

The first season is the starting point and only had 13 episodes. There is still a certain harmony between Al and Peggy this season. But already in the second episode, Love Makes You Slim , it becomes clear that Al detests sex with his wife. Every now and then Peggy still cooks for her family, which becomes increasingly rare in the following seasons. The third episode shows how much Al loves Peggy when he is seriously depressed because he couldn't buy her dream wristwatch for her wedding day. In the course of the series, such tokens of love become increasingly rare.

Since Al and Marcy have only known each other since the first episode, How It All Began , the relationship between the two characters is still fairly neutral. However, this relationship stretches from episode to episode. Marcy dreams of Al in episode 12 ( The Nightmare ) after she was wrong in a dispute with Al and Al made fun of Marcy's "chicken legs" for the first time in episode 13 ( Johnny's hamburger joint ). In the first season Luke Ventura is - as a work colleague - in the shoe store. His last appearance was in episode 7 ( You don't joke with stewardesses ). You can also assign the season based on the external appearance of the characters. Bud's voice has not yet broken and Kelly has heavily bleached hair.

Season 2 (1987/1988)

In the second season 22 episodes were shot. It is the first season with two-part episodes (episodes 2 and 3: The vacationer killer and episodes 6 and 7: women want fun too ). In the second season Kelly "dumbs down" more and more, which becomes clear for the first time in episode 14 ( Old Times ). Before that she had z. B. no problems with getting your driver's license (episode 8: Who will take me? ). In episode 9 ( Bundy versus the rest of the world ), the Bundy battle cry is used for the first time. In the episode Vom Himmel hoch ... (Episode 13), a Santa Claus actor falls in a failed parachute jump into the Bundy's garden. In this episode , the little boy Nestor is played by Michael Faustino , the younger brother of David Faustino. Furthermore, Michael G. Hagerty has a role as a police officer. In the episode Studio Air (episode 20), Al and Peggy pretend to be Steve and Marcy to win prizes at a game show. The presenter on that show was played by David Leisure . Ed O'Neill's wife Catherine Rusoff and Geoffrey Pierson ( For Worse and Forever ) also have a guest appearance in this episode as a competing couple of the Bundys.

In the last episode, The Terrible Relatives , several relatives from the Wanker clan are shown for the first time, where King Kong Bundy also acts as Uncle Irwin.

Season 3 (1988/1989)

In the third season, 22 episodes were shot. Noticeable changes are above all Bud's mullet hairstyle, his increased interest in girls and Kelly's increasingly stupid sayings ( Kellyisms ). Most of all, this season emphasizes that the Bundys have no food at home, except for Peggy, who dines with Als Geld outside the home. In addition, Marcy is increasingly drawn to other men, which can be seen especially in episodes 3 ( The Record ) and 6 ( The Birthday Present ).

The latter episode was the fate episode of the series, as the housewife Terry Rakolta of Michigan turned for this episode to the sponsors of the series and urging them to boycott this because of the obvious misogyny and the rude, sexist humor. Numerous sponsors turned their backs on the series, but since the Rakolta campaign caused a sensation nationwide - it made it to the talk show Nightlife and the front page of the New York Times  - the ratings rose sharply. So it can be said that this marked the breakthrough of the series. Nevertheless, as a precaution, it was decided not to broadcast episode 10 ( Sex, Video, Al and Peggy ) in the USA. This episode later became known as The Lost Episode and was first broadcast in America on FX (a syndication channel owned by FOX) 13 years later in 2002. Outside of the US, however, the episode was not removed.

Another special feature this season is the episode The King of Toilets , in which Al makes his dream come true and builds his own toilet. In the double episode My Wife the Queen , Al and Peggy are at a class reunion. In the end, Peggy is crowned prom queen and Al gets revenge with his former school competitor Jack, whom he publicly defeats in a duel.

Season 4 (1989/1990)

In the fourth season, the previously silent house dog Buck was given a human voice (as a voice-over ) for the first time in the episode State-certified housewife . The German dubbing voice did not yet correspond to the one that really became known as Bucks voice in the following seasons. In the episode Merry Christmas - Part 2 , Ted McGinley , who plays Marcys new husband Jefferson from season 5, has his first appearance as Peggy's ideal husband, Norman Jablonsky. From the two-part Las Vegas , Marcy's husband, Steve ( David Garrison ), can no longer be seen. He left the series to pursue his career on Broadway. However, he still has a few guest appearances in later seasons. Before leaving the series, he was allowed to crash. He loses his job as a banker, remains unemployed for a while, and is arrested for accidentally killing a saltwater turtle. In episode 6 - Bring on the little French women (Fair Exchange), Milla Jovovich ( Resident Evil , The Fifth Element ) has a guest role as a French exchange student who, thanks to Kelly's (deliberate) "help", fails in all subjects (even French). When Bud tries to secretly watch her undress, she explains that she doesn't care if he sees her naked. She has sex with Bud and certifies that he has great lover qualities. In episode 18 The Joys of Vengeance , Tiffani-Amber Thiessen is the object of Bud's plans for revenge. In the Miss Foldblatt episode , Peggy sells Al's Playboy magazines, which have been archived for years , to buy a lucky charm. Because Al did not prevent this, the spirit of his father appears to him, who voiced his opinion. Playmate Brandi Brandt has a guest appearance in this episode .

Season 5 (1990/1991)

This season, Jefferson D′Arcy appears as Marcy's new husband (Episode 12 - Terrible Awakening ). Jefferson has another German dubbing voice for the entire 5th season. Only from the 6th season he gets the voice of Christian Tramitz . Also, Episode 1 ( The Super Jam ) is the first episode in which the Bundys beat up other people together, a kind of running gag that continues in later episodes. Another running gag starts in episode 3 ( My Car - Your Car ), in which Bud demands a different name for the first time ("Big B."). In episode 2 ( Al and Kelly at home alone ) Pamela Anderson and Beckie Mullen have a guest appearance as Al's sexy bed bunnies. In episode 5 ( love goes through the stomach ), the well-known American voice actor Dan Castellaneta (including Homer Simpson ) appears as Pete. In episode 14 ( Look who's barking ), BB King has a guest appearance as a street musician. In episode 16 ( The Night Watchman ), Bubba Smith has a guest appearance as "Spare Tire Dixon". In episode 17 ( It's on my tongue ) Matt LeBlanc appears as Vincent.

Season 6 (1991/1992)

The season starts with the two-part film She is expecting my baby , in which Peggy Al explains that she is five months pregnant. Katey Sagal was pregnant in real life, so the pregnancy was just included in the show with the express permission of Katey Sagal. However, since Katey later suffered a miscarriage, the pregnancy was later explained by Al having just dreamed the whole thing. In episode 19 - Bud throws a party (Dinner with Anthrax) - the band Anthrax has a guest appearance. Bud also slips into the role of a white rapper and calls himself "Grand Master B". Special episodes this season are, for example, Fernsehmania 1 + 2 , in which Kelly gets her own TV show, and Bud's 18th birthday , for which Al and Bud go to the nude bar, which incidentally appears there for the first time. In the episode Das Ei und I , Steve Rhoades reappears after a few years, who is being pursued by the FBI for stealing the egg of an endangered bird. The season ends with the three-part episode Die Reise nach England , in whose plot the Bundys are invited to England because the village "Unter Uncton" is struck by the curse of darkness, which only goes away when all male Bundys are killed. In the final battle, however, Al defeats Igor, the descendant of the witch who conjured up the curse. This automatically breaks the curse and frees Unter Uncton from the darkness. Many British actors have guest appearances in this three-part series. a. Mark Addy , Steven Hartley as Igor, Alun Armstrong and Bill Oddie .

Season 7 (1992/1993)

At the beginning of the season, the Bundy family is expanded to include one more person, boy "Seven". The attempt with a new person to take up the old behavior of the now grown-up children Kelly and Bud did not work. Seven disappeared after a few episodes without comment. Later he appears as a missing person on a milk carton that is always refilled with water and otherwise shows the Lindbergh baby. In episode 141 - Bury me next to Fuzzy (Death of a Shoe Salesman) there is a typo in the video title, it says BEGRAGBT instead of BURIED. In this episode, by the way, the actor Dan Castellaneta is a guest, who lends Homer Simpson his voice in the original. Peggy also publishes a drawing by Al in episode 147 - The Man with Empty Pants . In the episode Peggy and the Pirates , Peggy tells little seven a pirate story that features the Bundys, the D'Arcys and even Steve Rhoades. As a result, Altrocker pretends to be a rock star so that he can get into first class at the airport. There he meets famous rock stars ( Richie Havens , Spencer Davis , John Sebastian , Mark Lindsay , Robby Krieger and Peter Noone ). In the episode Die Altenspiele , Al poses as a 65-year-old so that he can play in the senior championships. In the end he wins. Kelly gets her first permanent job as a waitress. Your employer is played by Brian Doyle-Murray .

Linda Blair ( The Exorcist ) and Bobcat Goldthwait ( Police Academy ) as parents of seven, David Boreanaz as Frank (The Bundys in the cinema) , and Charlene Tilton as a fitness trainer (When I retire ...) have other guest appearances. .

Season 8 (1993/1994)

The organization NO MA'AM is launched in episode 166 - The Male Feminist . Jerry Springer plays himself in this episode. In the episode Das Idol (Original title: Legend Of Ironhead Haynes ) Al reads out the nine rules of his NO MA'AM association, which was created by his idol and guru Ironhead Haynes. Haynes is played by Waylon Jennings . Another important episode is getting rid of the thing where Al is accidentally cropped. Al also gets his new employee, Aaron. In the episode Where is the dog, Buck runs away because he is no longer noticed by the Bundys. Immediately he comes to the shelter, where he was brought out again at the very last minute by the Bundys. Al is also haunted by the Grim Reaper , who appears with Peggy's face. In the meantime, the other Bundys appear as Village People together with Jefferson at Marcy as a replacement for the real group because they are late (at the end of the episode the real Village People appear after all).

Other guest appearances include a. Danny Bonaduce , Dave Madden , Gary Coleman , Joe Namath , Ernie Banks , Stacy Ann Ferguson and Todd Christensen .

Season 9 (1994/1995)

As a new colleague Griff can be seen for the first time in episode 187 (The Bad Niece), after his colleague Aaron disappears without a trace after only a few appearances in the 8th season. In addition, it is particularly noticeable this season that Kelly can be seen often in bikinis and generally very often about the topic of sex. Both Bundy children now also have jobs. Kelly tries her hand at acting (mostly for cheap commercials) and Bud works as a driving examiner alongside his studies. In the second double episode (Bad Business), Gary, played by Janet Carroll , appears for the first time . Also for the first time you can see Als NO MA'AM comrade Ike, played by Tom McCracht . In the episode Bundys times two , the Bundys and D'Arcys are mimicked on television in a sitcom. The favorite series, Psycho Dad , was canceled due to a complaint, and Al tried to get the series back on television with a campaign by NO MA'AM, but it did not succeed.

In the ninth season, many guest stars appear, such as B. George Wyner , Gilbert Gottfried , Wolfman Jack , Keri Russell and famous athletes like Bubba Smith , Frank Thomas , Joe Morgan , Mike Piazza and Dave Winfield .

Season 10 (1995/1996)

The season starts with a few changes. Peggy's mother moved in with the Bundys after she left Peggy's father, which Al is far from enthusiastic about.

In the ensuing episodes, Al tries to get Peggy's father, Ephraim, to bring her back. But he doesn't even think about it and instead goes on a world tour in episode 221 - At the Edge of Madness . Peggy immediately follows his lead and travels after him. Peggy's father is played by comedian Tim Conway . In the episode Hot Christmas , Peggy's mother works as a phone sex worker. In another episode, Al tries to mount a satellite dish on the roof of the Bundys with the help of the NO MA'AM troops. In addition, Buck dies this season and is then sent back to earth as Lucky.

Again, some celebrities have made guest appearances, including a. Terry Bradshaw , Traci Bingham , Richard Moll , Shannon Tweed , Don Novello , Casper Van Dien , Michael Clarke Duncan , Pat Morita , Jennifer Lyons , who plays Bud's friend Ariel, and King Kong Bundy .

Season 11 (1996/1997)

In the two episodes, Car on Drip , the Dodge gave up its ghost because Al couldn't find a new fuel pump . So he buries him in the garden. Only when Jefferson in Cuba persuades his friend Fidel Castro (played by Michael Sorich ) to get him a fuel pump for the Dodge, the "car doctor" Dr. Fisher ( Rick Overton ) revive the Dodge.

Al and Peggy broke up in episodes 249 to 251 - Divorce Hurts - because of their dissatisfaction, and it is only through the separation that they realize that they cannot do without each other. It's one of the few three-part episodes in this series. In the last episode, In Love, Engaged, Torn , Kelly wants to marry a rich businessman's son . The other Bundys are in favor of it. But Al abandons the wedding when he learns that his future son-in-law is not faithful and is living like a playboy.

In the eleventh season, some celebrities have again made guest appearances, u. a. Tammy Wynette , Robert Englund , Howie Long, and sports presenter James Brown aka J. B.

End of series

The official reason for the discontinuation of the series was the significant decrease in viewership after a few seasons. That was a reason for Fox , even though the station had first become known through An Terribly Nice Family . Contributing to the audience break-in was probably the shift in broadcasting time from Sunday to Saturday, but also the wear and tear of the concept of the series.

In addition, Fox was not ready to meet the high fee demands of the contributors (especially Ed O'Neill).

synchronization

The German version of the first nine seasons was created at the Plaza Synchron in Munich. The German dialogue books were written by Hans-Peter Kaufmann, the dialogue was directed by Erik Schumann (seasons 1 to 8) and Ekkehardt Belle (season 9).

After the series was taken over by Pro 7, the group's own dubbing studio BetaTechnik was commissioned to process the last two seasons. The dialogue books for these episodes are by Erik Schumann , Pierre Peters-Arnolds and Rüdiger Bahr. Erik Schumann and Rüdiger Bahr directed the dialogue.

So far, seasons 1 to 11 for Region 1 and Region 2 have been released. The complete series for these regions is now available on DVD. From the third season, the original Love and Marriage music was removed from the DVDs and replaced with an instrumental piece of music. The reason given by Sony was copyright reasons.

On December 6, 2007, the Bundys Big Box was released. This contains all eleven seasons plus a bonus DVD for the first time in a complete set. The box contains a total of 34 DVDs. The bonus DVD features two exclusive interviews with Katey Sagal and David Faustino .

Offshoot

  • 1990–1994 the company Now Comics in the USA brought out a comic edition of the terribly nice family. Some editions were also published in German by Bastei .
  • The episodes Her with the Rich Girls ( Top of the Heap ), Bud Strikes ( Radio Free Trumaine ) and Enemies ( Enemies ) were backdoor pilots for offshoots of American television:
    • In the episode Her with the Rich Girls , the focus is on the two characters Charlie ( Joseph Bologna ) and Vinnie Verducci ( Matt LeBlanc ), who made a brief appearance in the episode It's on my tongue . This should establish an offshoot called Top of the Heap , which is about the poor father-son duo, which tries to make money in more or less legal ways. Due to a lack of audience ratings, the series was canceled after seven episodes. Nevertheless, a separate offshoot followed in 1992, which was broadcast in Germany under the title Verducci & Sohn ( Vinnie & Bobby ). Again, only seven episodes were produced.
    • The episode Bud Strikes is about Buds College and the local college radio station, which is harassed by the new dean Steven B. Rhoades ( David Garrison ). Keri Russell played the leading role . However, this offshoot attempt did not go into series production.
    • Enemies was a clone of the sitcom Friends and represented the social environment of Kelly Bundy. In supporting roles of the pilot were u. a. See Alan Thicke and Phill Lewis . This series was never produced either.
  • An offshoot about Kelly Bundy was originally planned. However, this idea was rejected again because the actress Christina Applegate had no interest in the further development of her character and FOX also refused such a sequel. The idea of a “NO MA'AM” spin-off was also not implemented. The reason given for this is the fear of the broadcaster FOX to anger the female audience with this series.
  • In the series Parker Lewis - The Cool One from School (episode 9, Not the niece! ) David Faustino appears in his role as Bud .
  • In the series Nikki (episode 23, Technical Knockup ) Amanda Bearse and David Garrison appear in their roles as Marcy and Steve .

various

  • The title sequence at the beginning of each episode shows Buckingham Fountain in Grant Park and some highways in Chicago.
  • The Bundys live at Jeopardy Lane 9764 Chicago; the D'Arcys at number 9766 as can be seen in the series Angel of Innocence . The house shown from the outside in the series intro is located in 641 Castlewood Lane, Deerfield, Illinois, which can also be viewed via Google Street View.
  • The highway scene in some versions of the opening credits comes from the film Die schrillen Vier auf Fahrt from 1983. You can see the pea-metallic colored “ Wagon Queen Family Truckster ” with roof rack belonging to the Griswold family.
  • Tina Caspary and Hunter Carson were originally intended for the cast of Kelly and Bud, with whom the first episode was produced in 1986. But because they were not satisfied with this cast, these two roles were re-cast and Christina Applegate and David Faustino got the roles.
  • The stand-up comedians Sam Kinison and Roseanne Barr were initially considered for the roles of Al and Peggy . The latter, however, was advised not to star in a sitcom by her manager, as a film acting career was sought for her.
  • Casting the role of Al Bundy was unusually difficult for the creators of the series. After around 300 unsuccessful auditions, casting director Marc Hirschfeld finally brought in the then unknown Ed O'Neill, whom he had seen in a play two years earlier. He came to the audition from a handball game, heavily sweaty, which had such a positive effect on his performance that he was finally accepted.
  • In the episode No Sex Before Marriage (9x08), Al and Peg go to a video store to rent a film. When the two enter, a display with a poster for the film Dutch can be seen next to the door . The poster shows the two main actors of the film, with the eye area of one of the actors covered with the note Free Video ("Free Video"). It's Ed O'Neill, who starred in Dutch . Peg watches the video briefly, only to put it back seconds later with a negative gesture.
  • A conservative US viewer from Michigan tried to stop the broadcast of the series through letters of protest and talk show appearances. The consequence, however, was that the ratings rose and the producers gave her a gift basket with a thank you. In the episode Bundys mal zwei (9x09) a series called Die Pimmelmanns (in the original: Peas in a Pod ) is produced, which is the direct reflection of a terribly nice family . When Marcy tells Al that the Pimmelmanns have been deposed and he asks her why, she replies: "Well, some woman in Michigan didn't like it."
  • A terribly nice family was recorded in front of a live audience (from the episode Johnny's Hamburger Stand , this was even broadcast live). However, this is not noticeable with the German dubbing, as the same "laughs" are always played. However, if you listen to the episodes in the original, you can clearly hear the live audience. Especially in the last few seasons, the actors were celebrated by the audience when they first appeared.
  • Peggy's mother was originally intended to be played by male actor Harris Glenn Milstead, who gained great popularity under the stage name Divine . Since he died unexpectedly in March 1988, the figure of Peggy's mother was never shown in real life, but only presented as a voice from the off. It was originally voiced by the actress Kathleen Freeman .
  • According to producer Michael G. Moye , the Bundys were not named after the serial killer Ted Bundy , but rather after the wrestler King Kong Bundy , who also had several guest appearances: In two episodes he played a cousin of Peggy, in one others he embodied himself as a wrestler.
  • The original working title for the series was Not the Cosbys (dt. Not the Cosbys ) and was intended to highlight the opposite kind of humor and ideal family compared to the series The Bill Cosby Show .
  • In the German dubbing, jokes and allusions to the German television landscape were often made ( e.g. about Klausjürgen Wussow , the Black Forest Clinic , or Gute Zeiten, Bad Zeiten ), since the allusions in the original refer to US series and celebrities and therefore the German viewers would not have been understandable. In general, numerous jokes have been changed for the German version and have nothing to do with the original text.
  • In 1992 a remake of 26 early episodes of the Bundys was produced in Germany under the title Help, My Family Wins . The series starring Lutz Reichert as Josef “Jupp” Strunk and Christiane Zeiske as Roswitha Strunk in the lead roles had around twice as many viewers as the original in Germany. Although the Bundys ran on early evening programming while the Strunks were on prime- time, the Strunks' ratings fell short of expected success and the series was discontinued.
  • In the second episode of season eight ( Street Fighting ), one of the street boys is actor Nicholas Brendon , who later became known as "Xander" in the series Buffy the Vampire Slayer . Also appears in the episode Movie Show ( The Bundys in the cinema ) David Boreanaz as a friend of Kelly. Later roles of Boreanaz include "Angel" in Buffy - The Vampire Slayer and Angel - Hunter of Darkness , and he also embodies "Seeley Booth" in Bones - The Bone Hunter .
  • In the episode Wilde Zeiten (OT: Old flame , 2005) from the series My wild daughters , Katey Sagal in the role of Cate Hennessy meets her former series colleague Ed O'Neill as her childhood sweetheart.
  • At the beginning of the episode Angel of Innocence , the terribly nice family in the series itself is parodied before the series Cops begins, which Al is completely enthusiastic about.
  • A remake has been produced in Poland since 1999 under the title Świat według Kiepskich . This series is still very successful today on the Polsat station . A remake produced in Russia since 2006 is called Stschastliwy wmeste . In 2008 the Croatian broadcaster Nova TV began broadcasting its own version of the series under the title Bračne vode .
  • In the intro of the series (as well as in a few episodes) you can see the Bundy's house from the outside. If the camera changes to the (usual) indoor area, one notices a contradiction, since the front door and the garage are rotated by 90 °, i.e. lead into the width of the house. The location of Marcy's house often changes place in the series. Among other things, it is in the episode Once Upon a Time there was a house across the street, in other episodes it is obviously to the right of the Bundys, as the two gardens are adjacent.
  • In the Futurama episode Wedding Day on Cyclopia (OT: A Bicyclops Built for Two ), Leela, originally spoken by Katey Sagal, marries the alleged Cyclops Alcazar, who turns out to be a misogynistic curmudgeon in the course of the plot. In particular, the domestic scenes before the wedding contain a number of allusions to a terribly nice family . The appearance, posture and movements of Leela and Alcazar are very similar to those of Al and Peggy Bundy, and Leela calls her husband "Al".
  • In the episode "Der Super-Stau", the family is stuck in a traffic jam not in the often-invoked old Dodge, but in a perfectly acceptable Ford Mustang convertible.
