Janet Carroll (* 24. December 1940 in Chicago , Illinois as Janet Thiese ; † 22. May 2012 in New York City , New York ) was an American actress , musical actress and singer .

Life

Education and theater

Janet Carroll was born as Janet Thiese to George Nicholas Thiese and Hilda Catherine Thiese (née Patton). Carroll received professional vocal training from Dr. Greta Allum in Chicago. Later (since 1972) she took further singing lessons from Douglas Susu-Mago and trained as a soprano .

After graduating from high school and her acting training in her hometown of Chicago, she began her career as an actress. She first appeared at the Kansas City Starlight Theater and several Chicago theaters, mostly as a musical actress . She played leading roles in the musicals Mame , Hello, Dolly! , Guys and Dolls , South Pacific , The Pajama Game , Carousel and Gypsy . In 1972 she performed at the Arlington Park Theater in Arlington , Illinois as the Nurse Ratched in the play One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Dale Wasserman .

In the 1980s, Carroll played theater in Los Angeles . She appeared in Lady Windermeres Fan ( opposite John Lithgow and Lynn Redgrave ), in the play A Couple of White Chicks by John Ford Noonan (1988, with Cloris Leachman as partner) and as Klytemnestra in the play Elektra by Ezra Pound . For her performance as Klytemnestra she won the Los Angeles Drama Logue Critics' Award in the category "Best Actress".

In 2005 she appeared on Broadway at the August Wilson Theater in the world premiere of the musical Little Women ; there she took over the roles of Aunt March and Mrs. Kirk at the side of Sutton Foster and Maureen McGovern . In May 2007 in New York City she played the role of Mrs. O'Dare / Marshall in the revival of the musical Irene by Joseph McCarthy and Harry Tierney in a production of the musical company Musicals Tonight! . At the New York Theater Musical Festival in September / October 2007 she played the role of Grandmother (Granny) in the musical The Last Starfighter at the Theater At St. Clement's .

Movie and TV

Carroll has starred in numerous movies and television series . She made her movie debut in 1983 as Joel's mother in the comedy Loose Business . She embodied the still quite youthful, well-off, living in an American suburban mother, who after returning from vacation has no idea that her, played by son Joel Tom Cruise , now the family home in her absence in a lucrative brothel had converted . Later, Carroll often remained committed to motherhood in the cinema. She played, among other things, Barbara Holmes, the mother of the beautiful boy Ben Holmes ( Ben Affleck ) in the comedy On the Stormy (1999) and the role of Mrs. Hiller, the mother of Billy Campbell , in the comedy film Enough - Everyone has a limit (2002).

In 1989 she played the role of waitress Margie in the crime comedy Family Business, directed by Sidney Lumet ; at the side of Sean Connery , she was his girlfriend. In 2001 she played the role of Jane Sabistan in the US drama All You Need , a wife and mother suffering from an uncontrollable, debilitating illness. In the comedy Changing Hearts (2002) she took on the role of Mrs. Lane, alongside Lauren Holly , Tom Skerritt , Ian Somerhalder and Faye Dunaway . She played the Baptist Women's League chairwoman and generous hospital benefactor and supporter in this film. Dignified figures of authority in the last few years of her film career have included judge Dunbar in the drama The Marriage Undone (2002), Mother Superior in the thriller Confession (2002, alongside Chris Pine ) and the powerful United Nations Secretary-General in the action film and Thriller The Art of War III: Retribution (2009).

Carroll has taken on continuous series roles in the US television series The Bronx Zoo , Murphy Brown (as Doris Dial, stoic wife of anchoring Jim Dial), A Terribly Nice Family (as owner of the shoe store Gary's Shoes and as boss Gary), Melrose Place (as Marian Show, mother of series character Dr. Kimberly Shaw) and Still Standing (as Helen Michaels, mother of Judy and Linda).

She has also had numerous episode roles and guest roles in various American television series , including Knight Rider (1983), Cagney & Lacey (1985), Twilight Zone (1986), Golden Girls (1987), 21 Jump Street - Tatort Classroom (1988 ), LA Law - Star Lawyers, Tricks, Trials (1988), Back To The Past (1989), Glory Days (1990, as Mrs. Lovejoy; mother of Brad Pitt ), Matlock (1995), Pacific Blue - The Beach Police (1996 ), A Heavenly Family (1999), Beverly Hills, 90210 (1999), Ally McBeal (2002), Scrubs (2006), Brothers & Sisters (2006), and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (2010).

In addition to her work as an actress and musical singer, Carroll has also been a singer since 1982. She interpreted jazz , blues , Dixieland , swing and also traditionals . She has performed at various jazz festivals in the United States and Canada , including the Victoria Festival and Vancouver Festival in British Columbia , the Monterey Jazz Festival , the Los Angeles Classic Festival and the festivals in Newport Beach , Catalina Island and New Orleans . As a jazz singer, Carroll released a total of five solo CDs , including Presenting… Janet Carroll and the Hollywood Jazz Cats (1992), I Can't Give You Anything But Love (2000), I'll Be Seeing You (2000) and most recently Lady Be Good ( Arbors Records , 2010), u. a. with James Chirillo , Harry Allen , Warren Vaché and Tony Tedesco as backing musicians.

Carroll was a soprano member of the Canterbury Choral Society in New York. There she was the first soprano in numerous classical concerts, including works by Johann Sebastian Bach , Johannes Brahms , Antonín Dvořák , Joseph Haydn and Gustav Mahler ; she sang among others under Leonard Bernstein . In November 2007 she performed Mahler's 8th Symphony , The Symphony of a Thousand, with the Canterbury Choral Society at New York's Carnegie Hall .

Religious engagement

In June 1988, Carroll was in Los Angeles in the West Los Angeles Church of Inner Light for pastor ( Ordained Minister ) of the denomination Church of Inner Light consecrated. In this capacity she held baptisms, weddings, memorial services and funerals for her religious community.

Private

Carroll had two sons, Thomas (†) and George Eric. She died at the age of 71 of a brain tumor in her Manhattan home on Riverside Drive .
