Foster's first role was in 1996 as a stand-in (understudy) for Sandy Dumbrowski in the musical Grease . In 1997 she appeared in The Scarlet Seal and in Annie . Her next role was in 2000 as a replacement for Eponine in the musical Les Misérables .

She was initially intended for a minor role in the musical Thoroughly Modern Millie . While rehearsing at the La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego , the producers decided to give her the role of Millie. She replaced Erin Dilly with it . For this role she received mostly positive reviews, Howard Kissel of the New York Daily News described her as "Newcomer Sutton Foster, who has the perky demeanor, the bright voice and a stunning footwork to be an exceptionally good Millie" (engl . "Newcomer Sutton Foster, who has the pert look, the silver voice and the dazzling legwork to make an extraordinarily winning Millie"). Clive Barnes wrote for the New York Post : “Newcomer Sutton Foster's breakthrough role as Millie is utterly charming, but it doesn't make Broadway the sparkle and sparkle like a Christmas tree on a July noon. But she has a good voice and is amiable ”(Engl.“ Newcomer Sutton Foster's own star turn as Millie is perfectly charming, but as a star she doesn't twinkle, glitter or light up Broadway like a Christmas tree defying a July noon. But she has a good voice and is cutely agreeable "). Time Magazine : “Sutton Foster has the whole package: girlish awkwardness paired with Broadway chic, the legs and the lungs. Foster is one of the main reasons the show is one of the cutest things on Broadway ”(she's [Sutton Foster] got the full package: girlish gawkiness and Broadway brass, the legs and the lungs. Foster is a big reason the show is just about the cutest thing to hit Broadway since Annie's dimples, with perkily retro songs by Jeanine Tesori and clever staging by director Michael Mayer "). Foster won the 2002 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical , the Drama Desk Award for Leading Actress in a Musical, and the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Actress in a Musical.

Foster played Jo March on the side of Maureen McGovern as Marmee in the musical adaptation of the novel Little Women by Louisa May Alcott and was nominated for a Tony Award in 2005. In 2006 she returned to the Marquis Theater on Broadway and starred in The Drowsy Chaperone , a parody of musicals from the 1920s. She played the role of Janet van de Graaff, a Broadway celebrity who quit her career to enjoy family life. She received her third nomination for a Tony Award for this. Foster was also seen in Mel Brook's musical adaptation of the film Frankenstein Junior , where she played the Swedish Miss Inga from October 2007 to July 2008.

Foster made her off-Broadway debut in the comedy play Trust , written by Paul Weitz , which was performed at the Second Stage Theater from July 23 to September 12, 2010 . In addition to her, Zach Braff , Bobby Cannavale and Ari Graynor could also be seen in it.

From March 10, 2011 Foster played the role of Reno Sweeney in the musical Anything Goes at the Stephen Sondheim Theater . For this role, Foster won her third Outer Critics Circle Award, as well as her second Drama Desk Award and Tony Award. Foster made her last appearance in the game on March 11, 2012, and was subsequently replaced by Stephanie J. Block .
