The Drowsy Chaperone

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Drowsy Chaperone or Wedding with Obstacles is a musical based on the book by Bob Martin and Don McKellar and the music by Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison. It's a parody of the American musical comedies of the 1920s. It is about an aging music lover. When he listens to his favorite musical on a double LP, the musical comes to life in his small one-room apartment.

The musical made its debut at Rivoli in Toronto in 1998 and premiered on Broadway on May 1, 2006 . The show won the Tony Award for Best Book and Music, plus three others. The German-language premiere took place on April 27, 2013 at the Theater Hof (director: Reinhardt Friese, translation: Roman Hinze). The Bielefeld Theater will perform the same translation on September 4, 2016 (Director: Thomas Winter).

action

A theater fanatic is playing the record of his favorite musical when the characters in the plot come to life in the middle of his small, shabby apartment. He ironically comments on the music, the story and the actors. It's about the planned wedding between the son of a wealthy oil magnate and a Broadway starlet who wants to give up the stage for the veil. A chaperone makes sure the bride and groom don't see each other before the ceremony, but gets drunk. She is the drowsy (tipsy) chaperone of the original title. After all sorts of entanglements, a wedding suddenly seems impossible. But finally all misunderstandings cleared up, and in the end, completely surprisingly, three more couples marry and they all fly away singing.
