Troy is a city in Oakland County in the US state of Michigan . The city was founded in the 1840s and named after the founder's hometown, Troy, New York State . Symbol of the city is the Beaver ( Beaver ), the main street of the city is called Big Beaver Road .
geography
The city extends over an area of 87.1 km² , 0.3 km² of which is water. It is located north within the larger catchment area of the city of Detroit . Troy is just off Interstate 75, the main route between Detroit and the former industrial cities of Pontiac and Flint .
Most of the city consists of single-family housing estates of the middle and upper class, mostly inhabited by well-educated people of white skin color. This differs significantly from the impoverished and neglected settlement belt around Detroit, only a few kilometers south.
Culture
The city has an open-air museum , the Troy Museum & Historic Village , where ten historic buildings can be viewed.
The city's public library , the Troy Public Library , opened in 1962. In 1971 the library made a name for itself with an unusual campaign. Numerous celebrities wrote letters to the city's children to encourage them to read and use the library. Letters to the Children of Troy came from Douglas Fairbanks Junior , Isaac Asimov , Kingsley Amis , Pat Nixon , Neil Armstrong , Pearl S. Buck and Ronald Reagan , among others . In 2002, the library achieved over 1 million loans a year for the first time. In 2010 there were massive budget cuts, combined with downsizing and restricted opening hours. The continuation of the library beyond 2011 is questionable.
