Rochester Hills is a city in Oakland County in the US state of Michigan . The 85.3 km² city had 68,825 inhabitants in 2000. The city is an affluent suburb on the northern edge of Metro Detroit .

geography

Rochester Hills is located about 25 miles north of Detroit . Neighboring cities are Rochester in the northeast, Troy in the south and Auburn Hills in the west.

According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of ​​85.3 km², of which 0.2 km² are water bodies. The 203 km long River Rouge has its source in Rochester Hills. It eventually flows into the Detroit River . Remnants of the only partially completed Clinton-Kalamazoo Canal can still be seen in the municipality .

history

In 1835 the village was founded as Avon Township . Rochester was founded in 1869 as a village within the township . In 1966, the residents of Rochester finally voted for their locality to be administered as a City . As a result, they no longer had to pay property taxes to the township.

In 1967, a petition was finally filed in Avon Township to obtain city rights. However, three different articles of association were rejected by voters in 1969, 1970 and 1971. Rochester then tried to appropriate the township, which was unanimously rejected by the Michigan Boundary Commission . As a result, a petition was filed in 1972 that Avon Township wanted to merge with Rochester. This was rejected in April 1974 in Avon Township with 350 votes, while it was accepted in Rochester with a difference of 4 votes.

In May 1984, Avon Township voters finally approved a town charter. On November 20, 1984, the township became the City of Rochester Hills . However, discussions about a merger with Rochester continued, and in 1987 these plans were clearly rejected by voters in both cities.
