The Oakland University is a state university in Rochester in the US state of Michigan . There are currently 18,169 students enrolled at the university.
history
The university was founded in 1957 after Matilda Dodge Wilson, widow of automaker John Francis Dodge , and her second husband, Alfred Wilson, bequeathed land to Michigan State University . It was initially named Michigan State University-Oakland and was only given its current name in 1963 . In 1970 it became completely independent.

The OU sports teams are the Oakland Golden Grizzlies . The university is a member of the Horizon League .
