Horizon League

Expansion of the Horizon League

The Horizon League is a league consisting of twelve universities for various sports that play in NCAA Division I. It is best known for its basketball teams and does not run its own football championship. However, Youngstown State University plays in the Missouri Valley Football Conference , and Robert Morris University plays the 2020 season as an Independent in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision before attending the Big South Conference for football in 2021 .

The league was founded in 1979. The members are located in the American Midwest . Its headquarters are in Indianapolis , Indiana .

  • Purdue Fort Wayne did not begin operations until 2018, but inherited its sports program from Indiana University - Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW), whose earliest ancestor was founded in 1917. IPFW was split into two institutions in July 2018, one from Purdue University and the other from Indiana University.
