The UW – Milwaukee Panther Arena is a multi-purpose arena in the US city ​​of Milwaukee in the state of Wisconsin . The building, completed in 1950, cost 10 million US dollars and today offers a maximum of 12,148 seats.

history

The groundbreaking ceremony took place on November 3, 1948. The inauguration of the Milwaukee Arena took place on April 9, 1950. It was one of the first event halls in the USA that was also equipped for television broadcasts. In 1974 the Milwaukee Arena was merged with the Milwaukee Theater and the Midwest Airlines Center to form the MECCA Complex ( M ilwaukee E xposition C onvention C enter and A rena). From 1974 to 1995 the hall was named MECCA Arena. After that, it was named Wisconsin Center Arena . It was also known as the Milwaukee Arena. The multi-purpose hall was home to the NBA teams of the Milwaukee Hawks (1951–1955) and the Milwaukee Bucks (1968–1988). The Bucks celebrated the NBA championship in the Milwaukee Arena in 1971 and reached the finals in 1974. In 1977 the NBA All-Star Game took place in Milwaukee. The west wins 125: 124 against the east. In addition to the Hawks and Bucks , the Milwaukee Wave ( MISL ), Milwaukee Panthers ( NCAA basketball), Milwaukee Admirals ( IHL ) and Milwaukee Admirals ( IHL ) played in the arena.

Large wrestling events were also held in the arena; so z. B. the WCW SuperBrawl II 1992, the WWF King of the Ring 1996, the WCW Clash of the Champions 1997, WWF Over the Edge 1998 or WCW Mayhem in 2000. The ice show Disney on Ice is a guest at its performances in Milwaukee in the arena . Since 2001, the Wisconsin Athletic Walk of Fame has been running along the arena with famous Wisconsin athletes.

In 1988, the Bradley Center opened in the immediate vicinity and the teams moved into the modern new building. From 1993 to 1998 and from 2003 to 2011 the NCAA basketball team of the Milwaukee Panthers ( Horizon League ) from the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee used the hall. After a complete renovation in 1998, Milwaukee Wave returned from the MISL to the US Cellular Arena. In 2008 and 2009, the Milwaukee Bonecrushers (CIFL) were based in the hall for two seasons. The Milwaukee Iron had to play a play-off game against Chicago Rush in the arena in 2010 , as the Bradley Center was being renovated at the time. In 2013 the Milwaukee Panthers returned. The contract runs for five years until 2018. The University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee and the Wisconsin Center District (WCD) agreed on this as hall owners. In 2012 and 2013, the Milwaukee Panthers played at the Klotsche Center on the university campus with only 3,500 seats.

In May 2014, the announced mobile phone company US Cellular that the current contract on the naming rights will not be extended. A little later on June 26th, the hall was renamed UW – Milwaukee Panther Arena . This agreement will initially run until 2024. UWM has the option to extend the contract by five years until 2029.
