Robert Plant
Robert Anthony Plant , CBE (born August 20, 1948 in West Bromwich , Staffordshire ) is a British rock musician . From its founding in 1968 until its dissolution in 1980, he was lead singer of the British rock band Led Zeppelin . He also played the harmonica .
In front of Led Zeppelin
Plant came from the Black Country , a coal mining region west of Birmingham. He grew up carefree in rural Kidderminster . His father was a hydraulic engineer.
In 1966 and 1967 Plant had first recordings for the record company CBS with the band Listen. With the "Band of Joy" he has a. a. Covered songs by Jefferson Airplane , Quicksilver or Moby Grape . With Alexis Korner he took on blues standards (a joint recording is e.g. Operator on the 1972 album Bootleg Him ).
Led Zeppelin
Robert Plant became famous with the hard rock band Led Zeppelin (with Jimmy Page , John Paul Jones and John Bonham ), whose singer he was from the formation in 1968 until the dissolution in 1980. He wrote most of the texts and was essentially inspired by Germanic and Celtic mythology as well as by various books on this mythological subject, u. a. those of JRR Tolkien . Examples are the lyrics of Ramble On , Immigrant Song , Stairway to Heaven , Misty Mountain Hop , The Rain Song , No Quarter and especially The Battle of Evermore .
Parallel to the success of Led Zeppelin, Robert Plant became a role model for a whole generation of hard rock singers in terms of singing style as well as outfit and stage presence. Many singers tried to imitate his style, such as B. David Coverdale from Whitesnake , Bon Scott from AC / DC and David Lee Roth from Van Halen . In 2008, Rolling Stone listed Plant 15th of the 100 best singers of all time .
Solo career
Plant began an eclectic solo career in 1982. Before that, a collaboration with Jimmy Page and Chris Squire and Alan White from Yes under the name XYZ (Ex Yes Zeppelin) had failed because Plant, who joined them after a while, found the song material to be too little emotional. Some of the song ideas later appeared as bootlegs and on albums by The Firm and Yes .
In his experimental music projects, Plant always strives to stay true to his stylistic range from the time with Led Zeppelin, while at the same time taking into account new influences from the current musical trends and integrating them into his own style. To do this, he called on various musicians, such as lead guitarists Robbie Blunt and Doug Boyle , keyboardists Jezz Woodroffe and Phil Johnstone, and drummers Cozy Powell , Phil Collins and Ritchie Hayward . In this context, the project The Honeydrippers from 1984 should also be mentioned, together with Jimmy Page, formerly Led Zeppelin and Yardbirds , Jeff Beck , also Yardbirds and successful as a soloist, and Nile Rodgers ( Chic ).
With his characteristic high voice Plant sang energetic rock songs and a. Burning Down One Side , The Way I Feel and Hurting Kind , songs with an oriental touch like Slow Dancer , Wreckless Love and Too Loud as well as ballads such as B. Big Log , Ship of Fools, and Colors of a Shade . He added quotes from Led Zeppelin classics ( Whole Lotta Love , Black Dog , Custard Pie and The Ocean ) to the song Tall Cool One from the Now and Zen album using modern sampling technology .
In 1994 and 1998 Robert Plant released two albums together with Jimmy Page, No Quarter with newly recorded and arranged Led Zeppelin songs for the MTV Unplugged series and Walking into Clarksdale , which is primarily based on the folk blues tradition of the Led Zeppelin III and album ties in with the ethno-rock tradition of the album Physical Graffiti and further develops it experimentally. Examples are the songs Blue Train and Most High , for more see Page & Plant .
After working with Jimmy Page, Plant continued his solo career. The album Dreamland , recorded with new musicians, contains partially alienated reinterpretations of folk classics such as Morning Dew ( Tim Rose ), Song to the Siren ( Tim Buckley ) and Hey Joe ( Billy Roberts ) as well as a cover version of Bob Dylan's One More Cup of Coffee . Building on this music concept, Plant founded the project “The Priory of Brion” with the new band “Strange Sensation”. This is characterized by unconventional own compositions. B. Elements and sounds of ethnic music enter into a symbiosis with blues rock structures . One example is the song Shine It All Around from the album Mighty Rearranger in its two versions.
In 2007 Robert Plant met the American bluegrass musician Alison Krauss while preparing for a joint contribution to a “tribute-to- leadbelly ” concert . Together they recorded the album Raising Sand , which was released in October 2007 and won five Grammys at the 2009 Grammy Awards.
In 2009 Plant was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire .
Plant was married to Maureen Wilson from 1968 to 1983. He has four children. His first son Karac died in 1977 at the age of five of complications from a virus infection.
Plant played with his new band Sensational Space Shifters at the Bluesfest at the Royal Albert Hall; a live recording of this band's second concert from October 2012 was available for download shortly after the recording.
The new album Carry Fire was released on October 13, 2017. Carry Fire was resumed with the Sensational Space Shifters. There were also some guests in the studio, such as Chrissie Hynde , who sings the song Bluebirds Over The Mountain with Plant .
