Alan White (born June 14, 1949 in Pelton , County Durham ) is a British drummer . He is best known for his membership in the progressive rock band Yes . He also played as a studio musician on several albums by well-known rock artists such as John Lennon , George Harrison , Joe Cocker , Ginger Baker and The Ventures .

biography

White began playing the piano at the age of six . He later switched to drums and was a member of several local bands at the age of 13. After engagements in various bands in the 1960s, he became a member of Ginger Baker's Air Force . The following year he was hired by John Lennon for the Plastic Ono Band . He also played on Lennon's solo album Imagine . Lennon also introduced White to his Beatles colleague George Harrison. He then played on his album All Things Must Pass .

In 1972 Alan White was on tour with Joe Cocker when he received an offer to join the band Yes. Shortly after meeting Yes founding members Jon Anderson and Chris Squire , White was already playing for a concert on the Close to the Edge tour. White replaced Bill Bruford at Yes , who moved to King Crimson . Alan White should integrate more rock elements into the music of Yes according to Bill Bruford's jazz approach . As a result, White played on all Yes studio albums from Tales from Topographic Oceans and is one of the most consistent members of a band that is characterized by constant personnel changes. In addition to playing the drums, White also took part in the composition of the pieces.

In 1975/1976 each Yes member released a solo album. White's record was called Ramshackled and of all five solo albums it was the furthest removed from the style of his main band. On Ramshackled Although also found progressive rock , but in addition also pop, jazz rock and reggae .

White

It wasn't until 2006 that Alan White released another album under his name. White is both the name of the album and the band that recorded it. So there can be no question of a second solo project. The drummer recorded it with members of the Seattle bands MerKaBa and Treason and Yes and Asia keyboarder Geoff Downes , all of whom were involved in the creation of the music. The album cover comes from fantasy artist Roger Dean . The band played a few live concerts, but a major tour has not yet materialized. This is particularly regretted by fans who like the Yes album Drama , as White has always played drama material as well. When the The More Drama Tour of the bands The Syn (with Yes bassist Chris Squire ) and White with Steve Howe , which was planned for 2005, was also canceled, the chances of hearing drama material live again fell further.

Circa

Several (former) Yes musicians formed a new band under the name Circa: in 2006 : Billy Sherwood (bass, vocals), Alan White, Tony Kaye (Hammond, keyboards) and Jimmy Haun (guitar, vocals), before that on Union and the Chris Squire Experiment . In July 2008, Alan White left Circa: and was replaced by Jay Schellen.

Alan White is married with two children.
