Doris Troy

Doris Troy (born Doris Elaine Higginsen ) (* 6. January 1937 in Bronx , New York ; † 16 February 2004 in Las Vegas , Nevada ) was an American soul singer who by their fans as Mama Soul called has been.

She was a member of the Halos and Jay & Dee . Her hit Just One Look reached number 10 on the US Billboard charts in 1963. She was also a background singer with Solomon Burke , Chuck Jackson , Dionne Warwick , Pink Floyd , the Rolling Stones and Dusty Springfield .

Troy was born as the daughter of Dr. Randolph Higginsen, a Pentecostal minister , and his wife Geraldine. Since her parents rejected “godless” music like rhythm and blues , she began her singing career in the church choir. She was discovered by James Brown as a background singer in New York's Apollo Theater . Her life was brought to the stage in the performance Mama, I Want to Sing . The play, co-written by her sister Vy Higginsen, had 1,500 performances at the Heckschertheater in Harlem. Doris Troy played her mother and Chaka Khan played Doris Troy.

In 2011 the musical with Ciara as the leading actress, Lynn Whitfield and Patti LaBelle was released directly on DVD in Australia. A year later the DVD was also released in the USA.
