Lynn Whitfield (born May 6, 1953 in Baton Rouge , Louisiana ; born Lynn Butler-Smith ) is an American actress .

Life and accomplishments

Born as Lynn Butler-Smith, the African American , daughter of a dentist, graduated from Howard University . She worked for the Washington, DC theater company Black Repertory Company , of which she co-founded Van Whitfield and married in 1974. After her television debut in 1981 in the television series Hill Street Police Station and a few supporting roles, she took on the lead role of Josephine Baker in the television-produced biopic Josephine (alternatively: The Josephine Baker Story ) in 1991 . She won an Emmy for this role in 1991 and was nominated for a Golden Globe Award in 1992 for Best Actress - Mini-Series or TV Movie . In 1993 it also received the first of a total of five Image Awards.

In 1990 Whitfield married director Brian Gibson , whom she has a daughter and whom she divorced two years later. In the comedy Side by Side , she played a doctor who teaches Jackie Harrison ( Susan Sarandon ) that she is terminally ill. In the television drama The Wedding she played one of the bigger roles alongside Halle Berry , for which she was nominated for the 1999 Image Award.

The role in the comedy Head of State alongside Chris Rock brought Whitfield in 2004 nominated for a BET Comedy Award. In 2004 she was nominated for the Image Award and the Black Reel Award for her role in the television comedy Cheetah Girls - Wir werden Popstars . Her role alongside Jamie Foxx in the television drama Redemption brought her in 2005 the so far (March 2008) last Image Award and the Black Reel Award. For her role in the comedy Madea's Family Reunion , she was nominated for the 2006 Black Movie Awards.
