The Grapes of Wrath - Redemption (Original: The Stan Tookie Williams Story: Redemption ) is an American television film from 2004, directed by Vondie Curtis-Hall . In the leading role played Jamie Foxx alongside Lynn Whitfield . Other roles include Lee Thompson Young and CCH Pounder .

Plot background

The film deals with the life of Stanley Tookie Williams , who in 1969, along with Raymond Washington to Los Angeles - street gang "West Side Crips" founded. He tells of his development since childhood, but mostly of his life on the streets of South Central Los Angeles and his behavior in prison. The television film also shows the time from 1981 after his sentencing to the death penalty and his change from the obdurate prison inmate, who had participated in attempts to break out and assaulted the prison guards, to the repentant convict, who writes books against violence, racism and crime and helps out with violence to end the gangs and gangs especially in South Central Los Angeles. The film was shot in 2003 while Williams was still incarcerated. On 13. December 2005 in San Quentin State Prison , Marin County , California , was executed by lethal injection Williams.

The film was shot within 38 days in July and August 2003. Most of the shoots were in Toronto , Ontario , Canada , except for a day in South Central Los Angeles and a half day of outdoor shooting in San Francisco . The city's sewage treatment plant was used as the backdrop for the San Quentin State Prison. Production almost had to be abandoned when Michael Mann refused to take Jamie Foxx off his collateral release schedule . But Foxx, who had met Stanley Williams for many hours in San Quentin, was able to convince Mann to give him a 3-week window. Jamie managed to realize the film in Toronto in just 3 weeks and 6 days of shooting. During this time there was a massive city-wide power outage in Toronto and electricity could only be produced from the backup generators. Jamie Foxx's dialogue coach during the shoot was a former San Quentin inmate.

After its premiere on January 21, 2004 at the Sundance Film Festival , the film was released on January 24, 2004 via FX by Twentieth Century Fox on US television. On May 18, 2004, the film was presented to the European public for the first time at the Cannes Film Market .

The film was nominated for 19 different awards and won 11 of them. The film's awards include American Cinema Editors , Black Reel Award , Golden Globes , NAACP Image Awards , Independent Spirit Awards , MovieGuide , Satellite Award , Screen Actors Guild, and Writers Guild of America .
