The Golden Globe Awards are prestigious awards presented annually for movies and television programs . The last, the 77th award , took place on January 5, 2020.

The awards ceremony has been organized by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) since 1944 . A group of around 100 international journalists who work in Hollywood determines the award . In the early years only screen productions were rated, but in view of the growing popularity of television, the decision was made in 1956 to also consider the newer medium. In these two areas of the American entertainment industry , the Golden Globes are the second most important accolades after the Academy Awards (the Oscars ) and the Emmys .

The award ceremony takes place as part of a gala dinner, to which is invited who has status and name in Hollywood. Since the voting for the Oscars often begin a few days later, hope many stakeholders, through a successful showing at the Golden Globes in the favor of Academy -members to rise.

Meryl Streep has been nominated 32 times and holds the record, followed by composer John Williams with 26 nominations. Jack Lemmon was nominated the most for a male actor with 22 times.
