Golden Globe Awards 2008

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 2008 Golden Globe Awards were presented for the 65th time on January 13, 2008 by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), an association of international film journalists. Due to the strike by the US scriptwriters, this time the winners were only announced at a press conference, and the usual gala dinner was not included.

Nominations

The nominations were announced on December 13, 2007 by Hayden Panettiere , Quentin Tarantino , Dane Cook and Ryan Reynolds . Movies and television programs that were shown between January 1 and December 31, 2007 were taken into account. Foreign language films had to have premiered in the country of origin between November 1, 2006 and December 31, 2007. A total of 194 feature films (including 68 comedies or musicals), 9 animated films, 120 television series (including 46 comedies) and 37 mini-series or television films qualified. Most of the nominations received Joe Wright's literary adaptation Atonement . In addition to the nomination for best film drama, six other nominations went to the main actors Keira Knightley and James McAvoy and to director Wright. The main competitors for the dramas were the thrillers Michael Clayton and No Country for Old Men , each with four nominations, followed by the two gangster films Eastern Promises and American Gangster , each with three nominations. The comedy Charlie Wilson's War received the second most nominations with five nominations. She competed with the comedy Juno, the musicals Sweeney Todd - The Devilish Barber from Fleet Street , Across the Universe and Hairspray . Surprisingly, the top two hit comedies of 2007, First Time and Superbad , were ignored by the HFPA.

The best foreign language films were the winner of Cannes , the Romanian drama 4 months, 3 weeks and 2 days , the French biopic Butterfly and Diving Bell , which was also nominated for best director and best screenplay, the cartoon Persepolis , Ang Lee's Danger and Desire and the American production Drachenläufer by the German-Swiss director Marc Forster nominated. A total of 61 foreign language films were on a shortlist, including the German productions Vier Minuten and Strajk - Die Heldin von Danzig as well as the Austrian film Die Fälscher .

Both the Australian Cate Blanchett ( Elizabeth - The Golden Kingdom and I'm Not There ) and the American Philip Seymour Hoffman ( The Savage Siblings and Charlie Wilson's War ) were nominated twice for actors . Actor and director Clint Eastwood also received two nominations, but for the best score and the theme song of the war drama Grace is Gone . Chances of winning the award for best lead actor in a comedy or musical was mainly Johnny Depp for the title role in Tim Burton's musical Sweeney Todd - The Demon Barber of Fleet Street grant. In the past, the American competed seven times in vain for the Golden Globe, six of them in the aforementioned category - a negative record.

In the television sector, the television series Damages and the television film The Moor Murderer of Manchester each received four nominations. The comedy series 30 Rock and Entourage , the series Pushing Daisies and the television film Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee follow with three nominations each .

Steven Spielberg, recipient of the Cecil B. DeMille Awards

The six-time Golden Globe winner Steven Spielberg was announced in advance as the recipient of the Cecil B. DeMille Awards . He received this honorary award for his "extraordinary contribution to the entertainment sector". After the award ceremony was canceled, it was decided that Spielberg would not be presented with the Cecil B. DeMille Award until 2009.

The station ProSieben originally wanted to broadcast the award live in Germany.

WGA strike

The awarding of the Golden Globes was overshadowed by the strike of the screenwriters organized in the WGA . The reason for the strike was not only the demand for higher salaries, but also the desire for a general reorganization of the financial participation of authors in the income from their works. Negotiations by Dick Clark Productions about the authors' participation in the ceremony had failed, whereupon the WGA announced pickets at the venue. In solidarity, the actors' union SAG announced on January 5, 2008 that all nominated actors and the proposed presenters had agreed to stay away from the Golden Globe ceremony if the event were to be on strike by the scriptwriters. The HFPA then stepped up its efforts to find an amicable solution with the WGA.

The presentation of the awards in the fields of film (14 categories) and television (11 categories) was to take place during a gala dinner at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills and be broadcast by the US television network NBC . After the award ceremony took place on Mondays for two years, the gala should be broadcast on a Sunday again, which the producers hoped for higher audience ratings.

Ultimately, the originally planned awarding of the Golden Globes did not take place in this form. Instead, there was just a press conference at which the winners of the Golden Globes were announced. NBC had previously broadcast clips and interviews, followed by reports from Golden Globe parties. The damage NBC sustained from the loss of advertising revenue was believed to be several million dollars. The omitted portion for the HFPA alone was $ 5 million.
