Javier Ángel Encinas Bardem (born March 1, 1969 in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria ) is a Spanish actor . He has won numerous awards, including an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for the role of the psychopathic killer Anton Chigurh in Ethan and Joel Coen's No Country for Old Men , a Golden Globe , a Goya and the European Film Awards .

life and career

Bardem comes from a family of actors: his grandparents Rafael Bardem and Matilde Muñoz Sampedro , his mother Pilar Bardem and his siblings Mónica and Carlos are or were actors. He is also a nephew of the cinema director Juan Antonio Bardem . Before his time as a film actor, he played rugby for the Madrid club CR Liceo Francés , and as a junior he was also a member of the Spanish national rugby team . He studied painting at the Escuela de Artes y Oficios .

In 2012, Bardem played in the 23rd James Bond film Skyfall (directed by Sam Mendes ) the antagonist of James Bond , a former MI6 agent named Raoul Silva . In 2017, he played the vengeful opponent Sparrow, Captain Armando Salazar , in the fifth film of the Pirates of the Caribbean saga .

He is married to the actress Penélope Cruz and has two children with her. The wedding took place in early July 2010 in the Bahamas. His German dubbing voice is spoken by the actor Juan Carlos López .

Bardem has won numerous prizes for his work as an actor, including the 1994 Prize of the Festival de San Sebastián for his roles in your time runs off, Killer and El detective y la muerte . In 1995 he later received the Goya for best supporting actor and in 1996 the Goya for best leading actor.

In December 1997 he received the Audience Award of the European Film Academy .

In 2008, Bardem received a Golden Globe and an Oscar in the Best Supporting Actor category for No Country for Old Men . The following year he received a nomination for best comedy actor for his part in Vicky Cristina Barcelona .

In 2010 he received for his performance in Alejandro González Iñárritu's drama Biutiful , together with the Italian Elio Germano (La nostra vita) the Best Actor Award of the Film Festival of Cannes . Another Oscar nomination for Best Actor followed in 2011 .

Bardem is publicly committed to climate protection . On the occasion of the UN Climate Change Conference 2019, he appeared in front of the press together with Greta Thunberg and sharply attacked politics. However, he also expressed his hope in the face of the climate movement: "We are at one of the most critical moments in history and it seems like we are speaking with one voice for the first time."
