Juan Antonio Bardem Muñoz (born June 2, 1922 in Madrid ; † October 30, 2002 there ) was a Spanish film director and screenwriter .

Life

Juan Antonio Bardem was the son of the actor couple Rafael Bardem and Matilde Muñoz Sampedro . He initially studied agricultural science but began making short documentaries in the second half of the 1940s . In 1953 he founded the left-wing film magazine Objetivo .

In the 1950s, Bardem was one of the most important Spanish directors. With the films Death of a cyclist and the main street , he won the FIPRESCI Prize , Revenge was for the Oscar as Best Foreign Language Film nomination. Because of his open opposition to the Franco regime , Bardem was arrested repeatedly and his films were banned from showing . At a congress in Salamanca in 1955, Bardem said that Spanish cinema was "politically ineffective, insincere in social issues, intellectually worthless, aesthetically non-existent" and "gave no evidence of our time".

In 1982 he received the Great Special Prize of the Jury at the XXIII. For his film Die Maeldung , a co-production between Bulgaria, GDR and the Soviet Union, a film biography of the Bulgarian communist Georgi Dimitrov . Karlovy Vary International Film Festival .

Juan Antonio Bardem is the father of the director Miguel Bardem and the uncle of the actor Javier Bardem .
